John Stuart Day Obituary

Fairfax, Virginia - John Stuart Day passed away peacefully on September 27, 2025, in Fairfax, Virginia. John was born on May 15, 1941, to Carl and Virginia Day in Harrison, Maine.

After graduating from Bridgton High School in 1959, John earned a journalism degree from the University of Maine Orono in 1963. From there, he began rising through the ranks at the Bangor Daily News from reporter to political columnist. John traveled with former Secretary of Defense William Cohen around the world while reporting. He became a political correspondent in Washington, D.C., reporting on presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. John was the first Maine Press Association Journalist of the Year recipient in 1976 for his outstanding work. He retired after 27 years of service, but remained involved in political discussions online for quite some time - growing a large following on social media for his commentary.

Though John never married or had children of his own, he lived life fully and loudly. He had a deep appreciation for the cinema and all things New England Sports. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling. He also loved sweet treats and was a great judge of pies. John had an infectious laugh and was known by many for his humor and quick wit.

John is survived by his brother, Richard Day and sister-in-law, Linda; nephews, Richard II "Larry," Darik, and Wade Day; as well as three great-nieces, two great-nephews, and their combined 17 children.

The family will be holding a private service. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Kidney Fund in his honor.
