Jean "Jeanne" Powers Robbie-Shea Obituary

Brooks, Maine - Jean "Jeanne" Powers Robbie-Shea, 69, a beautiful spirit, lost her earthly body peacefully at home with family on April 9, 2022. Jeanne was born in Providence, RI, on June 26, 1952, to Walter and Mabelle Robbie.

Her entire family shared an adventurous spirit, whether they were skiing in the winter or sailing in the summer. From her mother she inherited her love of nature and art. Throughout her life, she looked forward to family excursions to the family camp, "The Rucksack," in Dublin, NH, at the foot of Mt. Monadnock.

Jeanne attended schools in Pittsfield, MA, and graduated from Barrington High School, RI. She earned her B.A. from Boston University and her M.A. from the University of Cincinnati in special education. Jeanne worked in early childhood education before retiring in 2016. She had a true love and gift for connecting with children, she was a "child whisperer."

Jeanne met Arthur Shea in 1989 and they were married in 1990. Together they built a life in several places over the years, including Oakland, ME; Brewer, ME; Essex Junction, VT; The Finger Lakes region in NY, and Worcester, MA. More recently, they found a community in Brooks, Maine, where Jeanne could be found birdwatching, singing at Midcoast Community Chorus, or presiding over her sprawling gardens. Art and Jeanne loved anything related to the outdoors such as boating, hiking with their dogs, and camping. Their most recent adventure was a trip through Europe this past fall.

She loved all types of literature, including poetry and history. Recently, Jeanne began working on a children's book. She always enjoyed a good hike, a great book and had an incredible laugh. Jeanne's kind and joyful spirit drew people, especially children, to her. They were all treated with love.

Jeanne was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Mabelle Robbie; and aunt, Alice Clark and Walter Goodrich. She is survived by her loving husband, Art; her stepdaughter, Heather Shea (William Manuel) of Burlington, VT; stepson, Nathan Shea (Jennifer Crittenden) of Brewer, ME; her sister, Susan Heckerling of Miami, FL; brothers, Peter (Libby) Robbie of Norwich, VT, and Douglas (Shelley) Robbie of Shelburne, VT; along with beloved nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She is also survived by three grandchildren and a great-grandchild, whom she loved dearly.

Nothing would honor Jeanne's spirit more than a random act of kindness or spending time enjoying the beauty of nature and/or the joys of a child.

A memorial service will be held at Jeanne's garden and home in Brooks on June 19 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest donations be made to UNICEF, especially to help the children affected by violence in the world.
