James "Les" Leston Myers Obituary

Old Town, Maine - In the early hours of October 13, 2025, my beloved Les slipped away from us into the loving arms of his Lord. Unique, multi-gifted, his sense of humor never left him, creating laughs and giggles as long as he was able.

He was born September 19, 1940, the eldest son of James William and Aina Myers. He grew up with two younger brothers, Willaim Myers and Thomas Myers, each four years apart. Many are the stories of hilarious episodes in those growing years. Given a camera as a youth, he became a fine life long photographer owning his own dark room, seldom seen without a camera in his hand.

Also from youth, his musical gifts meant he was almost always a member of church choirs both large and chamber sized. His love of great works of music combined with a beautiful speaking voice and natural delivery led him into broadcasting. He hosted music programming from Washington, D.C., and Virginia on local stations. This ultimately led naturally into the public radio field. He helped start a well supported public radio station in Birmingham, Alabama, as its first music director and drive time music host. Already in love with the state of Maine from several years of vacation visits, public radio brought us here, where he became program director and on air music host. We bought a house and spent the last 42 years of our lives together here in Maine.

Perhaps Les's most precious gift evident throughout most of his 85 years was his ability to love others. Our 50 years together stayed focused on that centrality. Unknowingly, he was still teaching me to love even as I cared for him.

My special thanks to all his many wonderful hospice caregivers. Also the Old Town Fire and Rescue were skilled and caring individuals deserving of all my appreciation for their care of both Les and me. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity. There will be no memorial service at this time.
