James Alfred Dunn Obituary

Hartland, Maine - James Alfred Dunn, 80, died peacefully at VA Togus Springs Hospice on August 16, 2022.

James (Jim) was born on April 18, 1942, in Honesdale, PA, the eldest son of the late Alfred and Edna (Schwartz) Dunn. He graduated from Honesdale High School in 1960 and proudly served our country as a mapmaker in the United States Army, stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. He married Margaret Marie Doherty November 2, 1961, and together they raised six children.

Jim was a quiet, easy-going gentleman. He was the ultimate woodsman and a true jack of all trades. He could often be found outdoors enjoying a hobby or working at one of his many trades. He got involved in harness racing as a young man and managed a large horse farm in New York, after the Army. He became a harness race horse trainer and driver. He had a love for the outdoors at an early age in Pennsylvania, and it only grew when he moved his family to Maine in 1977. In Maine, he worked as a carpenter, logger, fisherman (eels and suckers), fur trapper, game processor, wreath tipper, real estate agent and a Master Maine guide, just to name a few. He served a term as the Town of Hartland constable and as the animal control officer. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends hunting, especially when the PA and NY crews came to Maine for moose and deer hunts. His trips to Colorado for elk hunting were very special memories to him. He was an avid gardener and along with vegetables you could always find flowers, especially gladiolus, in his gardens. He was very interested in gems and gold prospecting and enjoyed passing that interest on to the next generation. One of his favorite pastimes was watching sports, especially baseball and his favorite team, the Red Sox. He was a lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club and had belonged to the Maine Trappers Association, the US Trotting Association, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

He is survived by his children: Lewis Dunn and wife, Mary, of Honesdale, PA, Jeffrey Dunn and wife, Darlene, of Walden, NY, Barbara Wentworth and husband, Kevin, of Oakland, Carol Dunn and husband, Tim Curry, of Fishers, IN, Kevin Dunn and wife, Lisa, of Hartland, and Marisa Belanger and husband, Bob, of Newton, NC; grandchildren: Matthew Dunn and wife, Kristin, Riley Wentworth, Blaine Cooper and wife, Hayley, Holly Reardon and husband, Joe, Dana Cooper, Marten Dunn, Nyssaiah Dunn; and step grandchildren: Vince Curry, Elizabeth James, Michael Curry, Bobby Belanger, Devan Belanger, Savannah Creasy, Nicholas Creasy, and Samantha Creasy; great-grandchildren: Jimmy Dunn and Maggie Cooper; siblings: Elizabeth Dunsinger and husband, Helmut, of Honesdale, PA, Jean Boyer and husband, Bill, of Dayton, OH, William Dunn and wife, Carol, of Beach Lake, PA, John Dunn and wife, Ellen, Richard Dunn, Amy Dunn all of Honesdale, PA, and Susan Maddock and husband, Clint, of Midlothian, VA; many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

He was predeceased by his parents; and his wife, Margaret.

A gathering for family and friends will take place from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, September 3, 2022, at Hartland Community Center, 62 Elm Street, Hartland, Maine.

A graveside service will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, October 9, 2022, at Indian Orchard Cemetery, Texas Palmyra Highway, Honesdale, PA, where he will be laid to rest along with his loving wife, Margaret. Military honors will be presented for his service to our country. A celebration of life will follow from 2-5 p.m. at the Central United Methodist Church Wesley Room, 205 11th Street, Honesdale, PA. All are welcome.
