Harvey Moore Dow
Bangor - Harvey Moore Dow passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 12, 2020, at his home in Bangor, Maine. Harvey was born on May 7, 1930, in Bar Harbor, Maine and grew up in Bernard, Maine. He was the son of Pearl and Louise Dow and was the oldest of 4 boys.
He spent his childhood lobster fishing, exploring Mount Desert Island and playing baseball, a game he loved his entire life. He graduated from Pemetic High School in Southwest Harbor, Maine in 1949, and then went to Hot Springs, Arkansas for a shot at professional baseball. His coach in Arkansas was hall of famer Rogers Hornsby.
After baseball, Harvey joined the U.S. Navy and served for four years, mainly in the North Atlantic. He attended Temple University in Philadelphia Pennsylvania after his military service.
In September of 1953, Harvey married Nancy Schwarz of Atlantic City New Jersey. They were married for nearly 66 years before Nancy passed away in May of 2019. After Harvey got out of the service, they spent the majority of their lives together in Southern New Jersey where they raised three sons, David, Kevin and Christopher. They returned to Maine as often as possible, normally several times every year.
Harvey was an Electronics Technician, and spent the majority of his career at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard working with radar systems on aircraft carriers.
For many years Harvey coached Little League Baseball and was a beloved manager of many winning teams. He instilled a love of the game in all three of his sons.
During their retirement, Harvey and Nancy loved to travel and went on numerous excursions throughout Europe as well as most of the United States.
In the spring of 2012, Harvey and Nancy moved to Madison Alabama to be closer to their youngest son Christopher and his family. He loved having his younger grandchildren nearby.
He said he had two sets of grand kids, Alissa and Jeff in Maine, then a 20 year gap and 4 more in Alabama. He was especially proud of all six grandchildren and enjoyed having them all together in the same place on several occasions. After Nancy's passing in May of 2019, Harvey returned to Maine to be close to his older sons, David and Kevin. He will be greatly missed by his entire family and his friends.
Harvey was predeceased by his beloved wife, Nancy; and two of his brothers, Carlton and Alfred. He is survived by his brother, Philip of Bass Harbor, Maine; and his sons, David and his wife, Terri of Old Town, Maine; Kevin and his wife, Donna of Eddington, Maine; Christopher and his wife, Nicole of Madison, Alabama; and grandchildren Alissa and her significant other, Ian Heath of Portland, Maine, Jeffrey and his wife, Sulva of Hayes, Virginia, and Tori, Sophie, Chloe and Garrett of Madison, Alabama. He has numerous nieces and nephews throughout the USA.
A mass of Christian burial will take place at St. Paul the Apostle Parish/St. Joseph's Church, Brewer, ME on Saturday, February 29 at 11:00 am, followed by a reception in the Church hall. Interment will be in the spring at the Maine Veteran's Cemetery in Augusta.
