Gilbert Darel Smith Obituary

Bradford, Maine - Gilbert Darel Smith went home to be with the Lord at the age of 56 years old, surrounded by loved ones. Gilbert was born on February 6, 1969, in Palmer, Alaska, to Darel and Sally Smith, the youngest of six brothers. When he was six years old, the Smith family made a cross-country journey and settled at "the farm" in Bradford, Maine, a place that would shape much of Gilbert's life and spirit.

Gilbert was a devoted father, loving husband, cherished son, loyal brother, and faithful friend. He was a proud dad to his two daughters and took great joy in coaching their teams and attending their sporting events - he truly never missed a game.

In high school, Gilbert played basketball and built friendships that he valued deeply. He loved classic rock and old country music, and in his early adulthood he spent many years working alongside his father, building fences for estates across the Northeast.

On January 1, 2000, Gilbert married his wife, Barbie. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, and hard work, raising two daughters and owning and operating a residential real estate business for more than 25 years. Gilbert's greatest joy was time spent with his wife and daughters - whether traveling, exploring new adventures, or simply being together at home.

Gilbert loved working with his hands, and found joy in woodworking and tending to his land. He was well known for his expansive garden, acres of blueberries, and abundant harvests. He took pride in cultivating his property and providing for his family.

With a generous heart and deep sense of community, Gilbert was always willing to lend a helping hand. For many years, he and Barbie taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School at Corinth United Methodist Church, and coached Farm League baseball in Bradford. His kindness and service touched many lives.

Gilbert especially cherished time spent at the family camp on Boyd Lake, where he could often be seen driving his boat or delighting friends and neighbors by dressing as Santa Clause on the Fourth of July.

Gilbert was predeceased by his father, Darel Austin Smith. He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara "Barbie" Jean Smith; his daughters, Tiffany Ashley Zarkadas and her husband, Evangelos Zarkadas, and Rachael Lindsey Smith and her husband, Evan Allan Busch; and his cherished granddaughter, Eliana Elizabeth Zarkadas. He is also survived by his mother, Sally Townsend Smith; his brothers, Kevin Smith, Keith Smith, Douglas Smith, Michael Smith, and Andrew Smith; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Gilbert will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and the joy he brought to those around him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Gilbert's life on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Corinth United Methodist Church, 275 Main St., Corinth, ME. The service will begin at 1 p.m. followed by a potluck gathering. All are welcome to bring a dish to share.
