George Robert Grant Jr.
He attended local schools and graduated from Mount Desert High School, and Unity College, Class of 1971.
He left us to join his brother, David Grant; sister, Carol Howatt; mother, Lucille (Campbell) Grant; father, George Grant; stepsons, William "Billy" and James Black; and nieces, Kimberly Grant and Jennifer Mae Howatt. He left us to join them in a place where there is baseball, fishing and hunting trips, poker games with his lifelong friends, camping, antique auctions and laughter.
George, Geordie, Papa, or Dad left behind his wife of 42 years Lucille Lewis Grant; three sons, George (Jody) Robert Grant III and wife, Darlene Hopkins Grant, Josh David Grant and his wife, Katie Grant, and Torrey Michael Grant of Syracuse, New York and his companion, Michaela Sattaur; grandchildren Alex David Grant, Andrew George Grant, Peyton Elizabeth Grant, Hayden Black and Brittney Springmann and her companion, Chris Savageau, and Boston Black; great-grandchildren, Mason and Myka Savageau; and niece, Wendy Grant. He loved his family more than anything, and told us on many occasions that he was put on this Earth to be a father and a "papa".
George owned and operated The Grant Insurance Agency for many years. He also worked for the Uniship Courier service until his passing. Both careers allowed him to drive around the State of Maine and do what he loved best, which was to interact with people. He was truly a "People Person" and had a genuine honest passion for life.
George also left behind a family of children, some now adults, who saw him at every ball game, concert, and school event they can remember. A family numbering into the hundreds that always knew his home was open to them, as a place to hang out with his sons, a place to grab a bite if food was scarce, a place to feel like home. We will all miss him more than we could ever put into words.
At his request, a graveside service will be held in the spring at Riverside Cemetery, Newport. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport. Memorial donations may be made to the Nokomis Boy's Basketball program, c/o Nokomis Sports Boosters, 266 Williams Road, Newport, ME 04953.
