Ellen M. Beattie

Events

Bangor - At peace with this life, but sorry to miss a good Christmas party, Ellen M. (Kiernan) Beattie drifted away and found rest, December 06, 2018.

Born 01/06/34 in Meriden, CT to Vincent and Margaret Kiernan. Ellen was a graduate of Lauralton Hall and Katharine Gibbs School. In 1955 she met and married Warren L. Beattie, together they had 5 children. It was during their honeymoon in Bar Harbor the seeds were planted for a future in Maine. In 1968, the family bought a farm and moved to Belfast, Maine. Ellen and Warren parted ways in 1979.

Shifting her focus from homemaker to a lifelong dream of artist, Ellen earned an art education degree from University of Maine in 1985. In 1989, she moved to Florida to care for her mother only to return again to Maine in 1998. From that day forward, she was either creating art, painting or teaching art. She enjoyed a number of years teaching art at the Hammond Street Senior Center in Bangor. Ellen also loved beach days, dinner parties, Saturday yard sales with Jane, reading Stuart Woods mysteries, watching loud cop shows and westerns, sipping a Dewars and soda (with just the right amount of ice), and watching birds at the birdfeeder with her cat Dottie.

Ellen was predeceased by infant daughter Margaret, former husband Warren, and parents Peg and Vin. She is survived by her children and their spouses; Kate and John Nimick, Chestnut Hill, MA, John and Lynda Beattie, Clifton Park, NY, Peter and Melody Beattie, Winter Harbor, ME, and Sarah and Tim Smith, Bangor, ME. She is also survived by grandchildren and great grandchildren: Tyler, Ryan, Ellen, Rand, Vea, Connor, Maddie, Izzy, Emma, Tanner, Christopher and Brennan.

Ellen's final years were blessed with an amazing assortment of support. Her family wishes to thank Estelle from Catholic Charities of Maine, Eastern Agency on Aging, EMMC, and the wonderful staff at Ross Manor. In keeping with Ellen's love for life, there will be a gathering in her honor Summer of 2019.
