Presque Isle - Edward D. "Eddie" Hews - passed away October 14, 2019, at The Aroostook House of Comfort. He was born May 10, 1926 in Presque Isle, the son of Ray D. and Esther (Gilman) Hews.
Eddie owned and operated a 300-acre potato and grain farm in Presque Isle. He was the Farm News Director for the Hildreth Network for 12 years, and hosted the Today in Agriculture program on WAGM TV 8. He served as Chairman of the Aroostook County, Maine A.S.C. Committee from 1957-until 1969 and was active in leadership roles in many Potato Industry groups. Eddie was a member and director of the Maine Potato Council and was active in the Grange, the Rotary Club, and the Methodist Church. In 1969 Mr. Hews was appointed by the Nixon Administration as the Northeast Region Director for the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service based in Washington, DC. He also served as Director of the Commodity Loan and Services Division and Director of the Eastern Region. Mr. Hews was Executive Assistant to the Administrator of A.S.C.S. In 1981 he accepted an Appointment as Acting Administrator and Deputy Administrator for Program Planning and Development for A.S.C.S. under the Reagan Administration. Eddie served as President of the Washington Chapter of the Maine State Society, President of the National Conference of the State Societies and President of the Soil Conservation Society of America in Washington, DC. He received the U.S. Department of Agriculture Superior Service Award in 1982. Eddie was a member of the Income Protection Task Force directed by the 1981 Farm Bill to study Insurance Protection for income loss by the Nation's producers by acts beyond their control. On March 23, 1983 Mr. Hews was appointed as Deputy Manager and C.O.O. of the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation. He became the Acting Manager and C.E.O. in 1987. Eddie worked as a senior executive at the U. S. Department of Agriculture under four Presidents. He not only was recognized nationally for his work on various agriculture efforts including soil conservation, specialty crop research, and federal crop insurance, but also on programs to support the East Coast dairy industry. During his time in Washington, he was a strong advocate for Maine agriculture, supporting projects as diverse as blueberry and forestry research at the University of Maine to potato seed research for the potato processing industry and the potato chip industry at Beltsville, Maryland. Upon his retirement on Oct. 1, 1988, Eddie and his wife Barbara moved back to Presque Isle. Eddie continued to be active in the community. He was instrumental in starting a business club known as the PROBUS Club of Aroostook, the first Probus Club established in the United States and was their first President. He was first Chairman of the T.A.M.C. Annual Fund Drive, Past President of the Northern Maine Fair Association, and Past President of the Fairmount Cemetery Association, and remained a member of the Trinity Lodge #130 Masons in Presque Isle.
He is survived by his three children; Jane Lockhart and her husband Jay of Warson Woods, Missouri, Ray Hews and his wife Suzanne of Presque Isle, Mark Hews and his wife Debi of Poland Maine, 5 grandchildren: Libby, Zachary, Erin, Alison, and Joshua and 4 great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife Barbara (King) Hews in 2016.
Trinity Lodge #130 A.F. & A.M. will conduct a Masonic memorial service at 1:00 p.m. Sunday October 20, 2019 at Grant Memorial United Methodist Church, to be followed by a memorial service and reception in the church Fellowship Hall. A private interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery following the services. I am so sorry for your loss, Mark and Debbie. Your father was quite an accomplished man and I am sure he will be missed by many. I am in Bethel now but I know you from Carters in Oxford, when David and I owned it. I now own and run Carters in Bethel. David passed in 2014. Thank you for your great support and again I am very sorry for your loss.
