Mapleton, Maine - Dwight G. Helstrom, 79, died Saturday, August 22, 2026, at his home, with his family at his side. He was born June 23, 1947, in Caribou, the son of Gordon and Viola (McBreairty) Helstrom.

He is survived by his longtime partner, Suzanne Moreau; his son, Dwight Helstrom Jr. and his wife, Stephanie, of Hudson; his daughter, Vicki Kirby and her husband, Blake, of Caribou; four grandchildren, Kasey Helstrom of Fredericton, NB, Sara Eatherton and her husband, Matt, of Presque Isle, Carl Helstrom of Milford, and Anna Helstrom of Old Town; and four great-grandchildren, Gage, Raynglei, Emma and Eli; and a sister-in-law, Ellen Helstrom. He also leaves behind Suzanne's children, Chris Moreau, James Moreau, and his daughter, Lila. In addition to his parents, Dwight was predeceased by his dear brother, Sterling Helstrom.

Beginning at an early age, Dwight was taught to work hard by his parents. He drove truck for Uncle Jimmy to the pea plant when he was thirteen. He spent many teenage years working at his parents' farm in Perham and could still be out in the fields harrowing at eleven at night. His mother taught him to always pick more potatoes than anyone else!

Dwight graduated from Washburn High School in 1965 and then attended Hanson Barber School in Lewiston to learn the trade of being a barber. He returned home to Aroostook County and at the age of nineteen began a career of cutting hair and buying his own shops. He cut hair for many years with his brother, Sterling, by his side. This year, Dwight reached the milestone of 60 years as a barber for Presque Isle, and finally had to hang up his clippers.

To think Dwight was all work and no play just wasn't so. He was a country boy thru and thru. He always enjoyed fishing, especially in Square Lake which he did right up to this summer. He trapped beaver, was a beekeeper for many years, and always looked forward to tapping maple trees in the spring.

Dwight was a volunteer fireman from 1966 to 1976. He enjoyed hunting, which was also a life-long sport. He participated in three moose hunts, one with his father, one with his son, and one with his grandson. For many years he hunted birds with his brother, Sterling. Dwight was also an avid snowmobiler in his early years.

Dwight was both a mason with the Trinity Lodge #130 AF & AM of the Grand Lodge of Maine and a shriner with the Anah Shrine, being a 50 year plus member of both. He loved making sure that Presque Isle children always got circus tickets from him. In 2025, Presque Isle gave Dwight the "Keys to the City," an honor he was so pleased with. The biggest honor for him though was all the friends and customers at his barbershop after cutting four generations of families hair, always ready with a smile and a story for his many customers.

Per Dwight's wishes, a graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Fairview Cemetery, Perham Road, Route 28 in Perham with the Rev. Dave Goupille officiating. In lieu of flowers those who wish to remember Dwight in a special way may make gifts in his memory payable to St. Jude Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, a charity which was very close to his heart.
