Doris Jean


Orono - Doris J. Stilwell Rowe, 89, of Orono, went to be with her Lord on August 5, 2019.
She was born to Rex and Evelyn Dawson Stilwell in Newburgh, New York, in 1929. As a child, Dot was a tomboy who loved to climb trees, was good at math but disliked spelling and writing, and enjoyed spending summers with her grandparents on Shelter Island, NY. Dot spent her high school summers working in food service at Lake Minnewaska resort. Dot graduated from Arlington High School of Poughkeepsie, New York, in 1947, and from Cornell University in 1951 before beginning a career as a hospital dietician. In 1953, Dot married Richard J. "Dick" Rowe. She worked at a VA hospital in California while Dick served with the Marines overseas. In 1959, Dick and Dot moved their young family to Orono, Maine, where Dot concentrated on homemaking, church activities, and community service. She was a longtime member of United Baptist Church in Old Town, a Cub Scout den mother, a Pioneer Girls leader, and a Meals for ME volunteer. She was a faithful intercessor and strong supporter of missions. She was also a world traveler, visiting destinations in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, and across the USA. Dot enjoyed swimming, candlepin bowling, and rooting for the UMaine hockey team.
Dot was preceded in death by her husband, Richard (Dick) Rowe; and one son, Thomas. She is survived by two sons, David and Steven; one daughter, Rebecca; eleven grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, at United Baptist Church of Old Town, with Pastor Scott Benner officiating.
Inurnment will be at the Maine Veterans' Cemetery in Augusta.

So sorry to hear of Dot's passing! She was such a sweet, sweet lady and will be much missed. I helped her many years ago with VBS, and will always appreciate her dedication and kind words. Sincere condolences to her family!
