Doris T. McDougall Obituary
Forland, Missouri - Doris Theresa (Arey) McDougall peacefully left this life on April 22, 2026, at her daughter's home in Fordland, MO. She was 99 years old, and was the final survivor of her generation in her large extended family. Doris was born on November 27, 1926, to immigrant parents, Lawrence Arey (born in Nova Scotia, Canada) and Theresa (Burlamacchi) Arey (born in Lucca, Italy).
She was the ninth of eleven siblings, with four sisters and six brothers. Doris grew up during the Great Depression in Billerica, MA. She had a tight knit family, and was especially close with her sisters. They loved swimming in the nearby lake, roller skating, going to dances, and skipping school on Thursdays to attend the five-cent, double-feature motion picture shows. At 19, Doris married a Navy man, William "Bill" C. McDougall Jr., on October 26, 1946, in Somerville, MA. They started their family in Washburn, ME, and moved to Hermon, ME, in 1964 where they raised their five children before retiring to Howland in 1986. After Bill's death, she enjoyed her mother-in-law apartment at her youngest daughter, Jacki's, home in Hermon. When her health declined, Doris spent winters with her daughter, Robinn, in California (and later, Missouri) and summers with her daughter, Roxanna, in Brooks, ME. In 2015, she became a resident of Brooks and in 2022 at the age of 95, received Brooks' Boston Post Cane. She moved to Missouri to live with Robinn in 2024.
Doris always worked hard, and had various jobs throughout her life. She spent time as a real "Rosie the Riveter" during WWII, potato factory worker, bookkeeper, and enjoyed selling Fashion Two Twenty products. She and her husband owned and operated the Pleasant Hill KOA Campground for more than 15 years. Her Catholic faith was important to her, and throughout the years she was an active parishioner at St. Catherine's in Washburn, St. Mary's in Bangor, and Our Lady of the Eucharist in Howland.
Doris was a warm, giving, and loving person. If she knew you, she was taking care of you. She was well-known for her ornate wedding cakes, as well as birthday or any special cake one could need. Her husband's hunting friends loved her homemade doughnuts, and Saturday night pizzas were loved by her children's friends. Her heart was big, and she became "Extra Mom" to many young people, and once you were in her heart, you never left. She loved babies and children, and could always make them laugh. She was an avid reader, very artistic and crafty; she made many quilts, mittens, handmade baskets, as well as stuffed animals and dolls for her children and grandchildren. She always brought her grandchildren surprises from her many cross country trips, she loved to dance, and she never lost her sense of humor.
She was predeceased by four sisters and six brothers; her husband, William C McDougall Jr., in 1997; and two sons-in-law, Bernard McDougal (husband of Valerie), in 1996, and Stephen Hall (husband of Roxanna), in 2025. She is survived by her children, Valerie McDougal, Fordland, MO, Roxanna Hall, Brooks, ME, and William C. McDougall III and his wife, Linda, Brewer, ME; daughter, Robinn Trout and her husband, Paul, Fordland, MO, and Jacki Schmidt, Hermon, ME. She leaves 19 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and many others she loved like family.
Doris will be interred in her final resting place in Fordland, MO, later in the summer. Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of life to be held on June 6, 2026, at 1 p.m. at the Varney Building, 24 Veterans Hwy, Brooks, ME.
