Bradford, Maine - Darel Austin Smith was born in Sharon, Connecticut on May 1, 1935, to Gilbert and Evelyn Smith. He lived a long adventurous life with his loving wife of 63 years Sally and his savior Jesus Christ by his side.

He and his life-long friend Henry McGhee graduated from Millerton High School, went to college together then proceeded to serve in the military together as well. The army sent Darel to Alaska where they raised six sons while fishing and working for the University of Alaska as an agronomist. With his Honorable discharge Darel was given his choice of homesteads where they had to "prove up" according to government standards, they worked hard and enjoyed many years raising a family there. They moved to Maine and bought "the farm" in Bradford. Darel then founded a fencing company, North Bradford Enterprise. His sons worked with him and the business is carried on by his son Douglas. He is survived by Sally his loving wife of 63 years, their sons Kevin and Eileen of Alaska and their children little Kevin and Isabella, Hannah and Derek, and Christy; Keith and Tami of Alaska and their children Sherrill Anne & Ryan, Little Keith, and Austin; Doug and Nicole of Bradford and their children, Darel and Sally's first granddaughter Heather "their first daughter" and her husband Mike, Ashley and Jake, Darel II and Heather, Tisha and Kyle, Rebekah and Jay, Kendra and Rodney, Lexi and Justin, and Sally Jo; Mike and Jessica of Bradford and their children Mika, Michael and Lexi, Jordn and Chiara, and Mitchell who is sitting on grandpa's lap in heaven today. Andrew and Gayle of Bradford and their sons Little Andrew and Aaron who is also telling stories with Grandpa today. Gilbert and Barbie of Bradford and their daughters Tiffany and Rachael. Special nephew/son Gary Smith who is currently serving in Afghanistan, and Erin Mcghee and his son Austin. He is also survived by a sister Geneva Collins of North Carolina.

He is predeceased by both parents, a brother Irvin and two grandsons Aaron and Mitchell.

Over the years many called the Smith farm "home" including a special niece Patti and a "daughter of their heart" Regina and her children Traelynne and Keanu.

Darel enjoyed all of his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Time spent with family and friends gave him the greatest joy. Darel and Sally had a special gift for drawing people into their lives and hearts. He is loved by so many and will be missed deeply.

There will be a celebration of his life on Sunday, October 18th at 1:00 PM, at the Smith family farm in the family cemetery. There will be a time for visiting and refreshments after the service.
