CMSGT Charles Cuthbert Porter Jr. Obituary
Raymond, New Hampshire - CMSGT Charles Cuthbert Porter Jr. passed away at his home in Raymond, NH, with his wife and his son at his side on July 6, 2026. He was born on August 25, 1942, in Lawrence, MA, the son of Charles C. Porter Sr. and Elizabeth W. Porter.
"Chuck" graduated from Brewer High School in 1962. He later received a degree from Excelsior College. Chuck enlisted in the USAF in March 1963 and left for basic training in San Antonio, TX. Following basic training, he was assigned to Topsham Air Base in Topsham, ME. On June 22, he married his high school sweetheart, Norma Drew Porter, to begin his 30-year career and 63 years of marriage and adventure.
Two years later, Chuck was sent to TanSonNhut Air Base, Saigon, Vietnam. With Blessings untold, he safely returned to Dow AFB in Bangor, ME, never to forget those who did not return.
Two years later, he was assigned to Ent AFB in Colorado Springs, CO. It was a short stay, and he was transferred to the Pentagon, Office of the Secretary of Defense, public affairs. He was there for five years and then was sent to S.H.A.P.E. In Mons, Belgium, for the next 4.5 years. Chuck was an Eagle Scout and started leading the Scout Troop there, along with many sports activities. His two sons were growing into such activities by then. It was a wonderful time for him and his family. His next assignment in 1979 was to his dream assignment at the USAF Academy in CO. He remained very busy with his job and helping with youth activities, still scouting also. He taught survival skills in those beautiful Rockies that we all still discuss with great fondness. In 1984, Chuck was reassigned to Osan AFB in Korea for one year. His family remained in CO. Very happily, he returned to his beloved AFA, where he stayed until retirement in 1993. Those years saw him attain his first career goal as he was promoted to chief master sergeant. He served out his last four years as the senior enlisted advisor. He would have stayed forever.
His new career was teaching JROTC in Fargo, ND, for one year, four years in Essex Jct., VT, and 15 years at Pinkerton Academy in Derry, NH. He did his best to instill "integrity" into his students and has influenced good in many young people. He also had six years in Maine, working with Civil Air Patrol. His passion for his work everywhere may be unequaled. He will be sorely missed by all.
Chief is survived by his wife, Norma; his sons, Charles C. Porter III "Chuck" of Maui, HI, and Kent Drew Porter of Sebago, ME, (Angela Porter). He is survived by four grandchildren who have brought him endless joy, Chelsea Wood, Nicholas Porter, Bryce Porter, and Garrett Porter. He has two beautiful great-granddaughters, Harper and Haylee Wood. He is survived by three of his sisters, Jean Murphy, Nancy Isaacs, and Patricia Woodbury (Kerry Woodbury). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Chuck was predeceased by two infant sons; his parents; and his brother, William Porter.
