Alton - Caroline Joyce Kennedy, 83, passed away on March 23, 2020. She was born in Millinocket, Maine October 31, 1936, and was the foster daughter of Michael and Blanche Burns of Argyle, Maine.
Caroline graduated from Old Town High School, class of 1955. She was employed at the University of Maine in the Department of Mathematics for 28 years and retired as an Administrative Assistant in 1997. Following her early retirement, she took several culinary arts classes at Eastern Maine Technical College and pursued a small catering business that she very successfully managed for ten years. Cooking was her passion. She absolutely loved having family gatherings and events where she could prepare huge delicious meals and desserts for all. She never went anywhere empty handed. Everyone loved Grammy's amazing potato salad and apple pies! Besides cooking, she also enjoyed sewing, gardening, quilting, reading, Zumba classes at the YMCA, spending winters in Florida with her many friends, lunch with the girls, and going to Rockin' Ron's music jams.
Caroline was an active member of the Old Town Emblem Club in which she did volunteer work for many years. She also enjoyed volunteering with the Ladies of the Alton Methodist Women's Club. In recent years, she has been a member of the Bangor Literacy Volunteers Program and a student in line dancing at the Eastern Area Agency on Aging.
Caroline was the devoted wife of James for 64 years. She leaves two children, both of Alton, James Jr. and his wife Patricia, and daughter Pamela Drake. She also leaves her four precious grandchildren, Ashley Freeman and companion Trenton Beliel, of Edmond, Oklahoma, Lukas Freeman and his wife Hilary, of Alton, Kristine Kennedy of Bath, and Kayla Kennedy and companion Michael Ronci, of Tucson, Arizona. Caroline enjoyed her four grandchildren immensely. She loved spending time with them cooking, sewing, putting puzzles together, and laughing. She had two great granddaughters, Everly and Calihan Freeman, both of Alton and one great grandson to be born in April, Jett Beliel of Edmond, Oklahoma.
She is also survived by her sisters, Marie Roy of Argyle, Jeanne Knudsen and her husband Bob, of Stockton, California, Doreen Miranda and her husband Tom, of San Marcos, California, and one brother, Duncan Macdonald and his wife Barbara of Spartanburg, SC. Also of special mention is Andy LeClair and wife Laurie, of Veazie. Caroline lovingly assisted in the caring of Andy on the Burns farm, from his age of three weeks old until adulthood. She has many nieces and nephews that she was very close to and very proud of.
Caroline was predeceased by a stillborn son, Roger Kennedy, her cherished sisters, Sandy (Mishou) Kennedy, Judy Kalel, two sister-in-laws, Elizabeth (Poppy) Boynton and her husband Brant, Linda Emmons and her husband Pat, and son-in-law Gregory Drake.
Caroline was a fun loving, caring woman, doting wife, wonderful mother, excellent grandmother, thoughtful great grandmother, special aunty, and beautiful person. She will be sadly missed by all.
Caroline's wishes were to have graveside services to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alton Methodist Church, c/o Paulette Borja, 3945 Bennoch Road, Alton, Maine 04468.

Dear Family & Friends,
Many years ago, I had the opportunity of working with Caroline in the University of Maine’s Mathematics Department side-by-side; and because she admired their brilliance, I daily observed her total dedication to the Professors’ Guptas’, and Professor Puri, as well as the remaining Mathematicians. For years due to her Statistical, Mathematical, and her typing expertise, they only gave her their papers to prepare for submission. She would follow their directions in preparing their statistical and mathematical papers, all of which left me astonished in her proficiency! Because I lacked her proficiency, I was very thankful that she possessed her capabilities.
I al observed Caroline’s love for her family and her friends, when they would visit her at the Mathematics Department. She would light up like a light bulb each time one of them would come to visit her for a few brief moments! And, I loved hearing her family stories of Jim, her children, and other family members and friends! I remember her excitement when she and Jim started building their log home (yes, that is as far back that we worked together). And, Caroline and I, yearly either at a Mathematics Department’s funeral, or at Christmas season while shopping in J C Penney, we would catch up with each other and our families. Yes, old friends do die, BUT not their memories, nor their happiness in remembering them. I have many wonderful memories of Caroline, and I am positive that I will remember them, as I think of you during these difficult days!
May God Bless You with His Love and Comfort!
