Winterport, Maine - USAF Maine Air National Guard MSgt, retired
I have gone to stand my last Guard Mount in the sky, standing tall as part of the thin blue line on March 10, 2025. I was born Sept. 14, 1949, to Elston and Amorette Mitchell.
I am survived by wife of 46 years, Kitty; son, John and his wife, Nancy; daughter, Sarah Sawyer and her husband, Alex; and grandboys, Axel Mitchell and Calvin Daniel Sawyer. Additionally, I leave behind brothers, Paul (Linda) and John (Robin); as well as nieces and nephews.
I started my work life at Newey Farms on the Winterport Cove, then spent a summer on a State of Maine paving crew. After college I did 4 years in the USAF (SAC) and 20 years with the Maine Air National Guard in security forces as a weekend warrior. I worked 38 years for USDA in many facets and offices. In retirement, I worked for Avis rent a car as a transporter, as well as security for the Bangor Auditorium and Cross Insurance Center. I always enjoyed most of my work life.
Organizationally, I was a 45-year member of the American Legion, rising to the position of County Commander. Also, I was a Master Mason and a member of the Anah Temple Shrine, a 12-year member of the Waldo County Search and Rescue and a 40-year member of the Monroe Community Church.
In lieu of flowers, a free will donation to the Monroe Community Church. A graveside service will be held at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Winterport at a date to be announced later, followed by refreshments at the Monroe Community Church.
