Barton Rand Hughes Obituary
Hampden, Maine - Barton Rand Hughes, 71, went to be with the Lord on April 2, 2026, surrounded by family. Born on February 6, 1955, in Allagash, Maine, Barton later made his home in Greenville, where he built a life centered around family and hard work. For the past 12 years, he made his home in Hampden with his wife, Janice.
He was a graduate of Greenville High School and went on to attend the Forest Ranger School in Fredericton, New Brunswick, graduating in 1979. Barton had a longstanding career in the logging industry, working alongside his father to build Hughes Lumber and Moosehead Cedar Log Homes. He later spent many years with Daaquam Lumber, continuing in the trade he knew so well throughout his life and into retirement.
He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 20 years, Janice Hughes; and his children, Kelly Murray and her husband, Dale, Emily Jones and her husband, Adam, Holland Rockwell and her husband, Alex, Aiden McIver (a grandson who was like a son) and his wife, Jocelyn, Jordan Cook, and Justine Treat and her husband, Adam. He was a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Tekoa, Hattie, and Myles Murray, Jaxon, Oliver, Cosette, Ozlo, and Otis Jones, Aldan and River Rockwell, Riley, Finn, and Poppy Lou Treat, Cedric Cook, and Saylor and Levi McIver. He also leaves behind seven siblings whom he loved deeply. He was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Mary Hughes of Allagash.
Barton had a quiet, easy-going presence that made people feel comfortable the moment they were around him. He never spoke a bad word about anyone, and carried a steady kindness and generosity that left a lasting impression. Many who knew him would say he was one of the best people they had ever met, simply because of who he was.
He loved his children and grandchildren deeply, and they were always at the center of his world. Known to them as "grumpy" or "buddy," he could often be found in the kitchen making sure everyone was fed. He loved meeting with his oldest daughter, Kelly, at his mother's kitchen table, talking about life over coffee. He loved walking in the woods with his middle daughter, Emmy, discussing trees, forests and wood. He loved doing the crossword with his youngest, Holland, talking about business ventures and ideas at his home on Moosehead Lake. Moments that will be deeply missed.
At his core, Barton was a man of faith. His greatest hope was that his children and grandchildren would know and love the Lord. He passed with the peace of that promise and the belief that they will one day be reunited again in heaven.
A private family gathering will be held. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Barton's memory are encouraged to spend time in a Bible-teaching church this Sunday or give to the Blessed Hope women's discipleship program.
