Barry S. McCarthy Obituary

Monticello, Maine - Barry Stephen McCarthy passed away Jan. 29, 2026, after a life defined by hard work, dedication, and pride in craftsmanship.

For more than 50 years, Barry worked as a professional painter, earning the respect of fellow tradesmen through his strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail. He took great pride in his workmanship and believed deeply in doing a job the right way.

Barry spent more than 30 years working for Hussey Painting of Hampden. He considered his boss, Roland Hussey, a good friend. Known not only for his skill, but also for his great sense of humor, Barry could always be counted on for a laugh.

Barry grew up in Aroostook County, ME, and spent most of his adult life in the Hampden area. The last several years he made his home in Monticello, ME, where he was able to reconnect with family and spend time with loved ones. Barry was happiest spending time on the water fishing with his good friend, Rick Witham or hunting deer each fall with good friend, Gregg Adams. He found peace and joy in the outdoors and cherished those quiet moments as much as time spent with family and friends.

Barry was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Janice McCarthy of Houlton, ME; and by his beloved children, Mathew McCarthy and Ashley McCarthy of Hampden, ME. He is survived by his brother, Robert McCarthy and wife, Ann, of Houlton, ME; sister, Debbie McCarthy and her partner, Harold Hoyt, of Monticello, ME; brother, Donnie McCarthy and wife, Heather, of Littleton, ME; sister, Michelle Williams and husband, Daniel, of FL; daughter, Jennifer Sewell of Unity, ME; son, Joseph Leonard and wife, Julie, of Chester, NH; as well as many grandchildren, nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly; and his sons, Jamie McCarthy and Barry McCarthy Jr. Special acknowledgement to nieces, Paizley Hunter and Makenzie Lee, whom he was especially close. The family would like to extend a special thank you to his sister, Debbie and nephew, Thomas Hunter, for always being there to support him as his health declined over the last several years.

Friends and family are invited to join a celebration of life at Jeff's Catering, 15 Littlefield Rd., Brewer, ME on Feb 15, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. Graveside services with be held at a later date to be determined, to intern Barry and his beloved dog, Molly, together in Hampden.
