Limestone, Maine - Avis May (Curry) Cantafio, 97, was born May 12, 1928, to George and Viola (Davenport) Curry in Limestone, Maine. She came from a large and loving family and often spoke fondly of her family in a small Maine town surrounded by her many siblings. She passed away Oct. 25, 2025.

Avis graduated from Limestone High School in 1945. She later went on to marry Fred Cantafio. During their marriage they shared three children, Valerie (Cantafio) O'Neal, Vincent (Darlene) Cantafio, and Terry (Lisa) Cantafio. Her love for her children and the family she built was boundless, leaving a legacy of care and devotion. While her family was the center of her world, she also pursued a fulfilling career, bringing the same dedication and passion to her work. Avis was known by many for her 32 years working for the Limestone School Department. As the school's longtime office manager, she ran the place with such authority that even the principal himself knew who was really in charge.

Outside of work, her greatest joy was her family. She was a proud nana to four: Tina, Craig, Melissa, Heaven; and a loving great-nana to three: Samuel, Seth and Nicholas - each one holding a special place in her heart. There was nothing she cherished more than time spent with them whether it was sharing stories, offering her signature words of wisdom, or simply enjoying their company. Her love for them was endless and will be felt for generations to come.

In her life, she had the privilege of exploring many passions and seeing much of the world. She was a proud member of the Red Hats Society, Extension, and the Legion Auxiliary, always finding joy in community and friendship. She loved to bowl, play cards with her friends, and cook delicious meals for family and loved ones. She was known for knitting cozy mittens for the local school departments and for her adventurous spirit - traveling on tropical vacations and memorable cruises with friends and family. Of course, she was famous for mixing up a mean margarita, a true reflection of her lively, fun-loving nature and zest for life.

Avis was predeceased by her beloved husband, Fred Cantafio; her parents, George and Viola Curry; and many loving siblings. She is survived by her sister, Gretchen Eliza Ward; and her three loving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many special nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends including, Nancy Pelletier, all of whom held a special place in her heart.

A service to celebrate the life of Avis will be held Saturday, November 29, at 11 a.m at Lancaster-Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover St., Caribou. Calling hours for friends and family will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., with a funeral service to take place starting at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests that donations may be made in memory of Avis to Aroostook House of Comfort, 18 Green Hill Drive, Presque Isle, ME 04769.
