Anne Stanhope Rider Obituary

Winston-Salem, NC, Van Buren and Fort Fairfield, ME, Maine - Anne (Stanhope) Rider, 95, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, August 18, 2025, at a Winston-Salem hospital. Anne was born June 12, 1930, in Robbinston, to Harry and Marion (Gray) Stanhope.

As a young child, she attended a one-room schoolhouse, an experience that helped shape her lifelong love of learning and sense of community. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Maine at Farmington and later received her master's degree from the University of Maine at Orono. Anne devoted her career to education, teaching life sciences at Ashland High School and throughout many SAD #1 schools, where she left a lasting impression on generations of students.

Anne lived life fully and energetically. She loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, fishing and hunting. She and her husband, Paul, were founding members of the Fort Fairfield Snowmobile Club and were instrumental in securing land for the Pine and Spurs Riding Club Arena. Together, they also operated Up-Country Ski Trails in Fort Fairfield for many years, welcoming skiers of all ages and sharing their passion for the sport.

An avid gardener, Anne grew enough vegetables each year to feed a large family, and her garden kept the entire family involved, whether they were eager or not. She also loved decorating and was known for her keen sense of style. A lifelong reader, Anne was a longtime member of the Philomathian Club. She had a deep love for the game of bridge, so much so that family plans were often made around her card games. She was equally known for her enjoyment of thoughtful debate and her ability to part ways with good humor.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Parent; her sons, Alan Rider and his wife, Beth, and Harold "Rick" Rider and his wife, Shelley; and her grandchildren, Adam Rider, Timberly Sweeney, Thomas Houghton, Jay Rider, John Rider, Ellen Rider and Megan Rider. She also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; as well as her sister, Harriet Burke. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Rider; her brothers, Harry Stanhope and Richard Stanhope; her son-in-law, Richard "Chid" Parent; and her brother-in-law, Alan Burke.

Anne will be remembered for her intelligence, independence, love of learning, sense of style, and deep commitment to family, community and the outdoors. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Robbinston Ridge Cemetery during a private service this spring.
