Madison, AL - On Sunday, May 12, 2019, Ann Patricia (Nancy) Dow went to be with her Lord.
Nancy was born on June 2, 1931, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Edward and Isabel Schwarz, the oldest of 6 children.
Her early years were spent on the beach in Atlantic City and she had a life long love of the ocean. In her late teens she spent an extended period of time in the hospital for rheumatic fever. Despite having heart issues since that time she never let that interfere with living a full life.
In September of 1953, Nancy married Harvey Dow, a sailor from Bernard Maine and spent nearly 66 years together, raising three sons David, Kevin and Christopher. After Harvey got out of the service, they spent the majority of their lives together in Southern New Jersey and visited family in Maine several times per year. They moved to Madison Alabama in 2012.
Nancy graduated from Rutgers University in 1975 with a BA in English Literature and continued on to earn advanced degrees. She taught English composition and writing for many years at Rutgers and loved teaching. She was selected to spend a semester at Oxford university in England and very much enjoyed that experience.
Nancy and Harvey loved to travel and went on numerous excursions throughout Europe as well as most of the United States.
Nancy loved to write and was a frequent contributor to numerous publications. She also loved to read and was a proud member of the library club in West Deptford New Jersey.
She was especially proud of her six grandchildren and enjoyed telling them stories about their fathers and uncles childhoods.
Nancy had many friends across the country and kept in touch with them throughout the years.
Birthdays and holidays were always recognized by a card and letter from her. She was extremely generous, and supported many charities. She will be greatly missed by her entire family and all of her friends.
Nancy was predeceased by two of her sisters, Mary Lou and Joanie and by her brother, Ed.
She is survived by her husband, Harvey; two sisters, Ida and Carol; and sons, David and his wife, Terri, of Old Town, Maine; Kevin and his wife, Donna, of Eddington Maine, Christopher and his wife, Nicole, of Madison, Alabama; and grandchildren, Alissa and her significant other, Ian, of Portland, Maine, Jeffrey and his wife, Sulva, of Hayes, Virginia, and Tori, Sophie, Chloe and Garrett of Madison, Alabama. She also has numerous nieces and nephews throughout the U.S.A.
Nancy was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Madison, Alabama.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Red Cross.
