STOCKTON SPRINGS - STOCKTON SPRINGS - Alpheus G. Robbins passed peacefully May 13, 2009, at home with his wife of 55 years, Shirley (Hall) Robbins, by his side. Alphy was born May 7, 1935, in Deer Isle, son of the late William F. and Beula (Morey) Robbins. He attended school in Deer Isle, then at Stockton Springs Central. He served in the U.S. military as a proud Marine during the Korean War. After his discharge, he returned to his home of Stockton Springs, where he started his business, Robbins Construction. He served as the town's constable in 1965, and was a fisherman from the coast of Maine to the Carolinas. Alphy also worked at Jarkas, Searsport; drove a plow truck for Fred Shute, and was a caretaker for many special friends. Alphy was a member of American Legion Post No. 0157. He is survived by his sons, Al L. Robbins and Peter M. Robbins Sr.; and daughter, Myrtilla J. Laieski; seven grandchildren, Peter Jr. and Alpheus Robbins of Florida, Amos Robbins of Swanville, Seth Prescott and Gary Robbins of Stockton Springs, Russell Brown, who is in the Army, and Holly Katrobos; and seven great-grandchildren. Alphy was predeceased by his grandson, Michael H. Merithew Jr. of Stockton Springs; four sisters, Virginia Pomeroy, Bernice Gildard, Elletta Dube and Madeline Robbins; and three brothers, William, Edmund and Frank Robbins. There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, May 18, at Mount Recluse Cemetery, Cape Jellison, Stockton Springs, with Pastor Cliff Gall officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Town of Stockton Springs, P.O. Box 339, Stockton Springs, ME 04981, toward the perpetual care at Mount Recluse Cemetery.
