Presque Isle - Alicia "Chickie" Smith, 93 years young, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2019, at the Aroostook House of Comfort in Presque Isle. She was born July 14, 1926, in Presque Isle, the daughter of Clarence and Laura (Tapley) Long.
On January 23, 1946, she married Russell W. Smith. They settled on the family farm in Mapleton and raised potatoes, peas, and two sons. She loved the hard work of farm life and worked many days in the fields herself. She loved to pick strawberries with her grandchildren, and always seemed to have some fiddleheads that she had just picked.
Following Russell's death, Chickie continued to live on the farm homestead for 5 years where she could see "the beautiful sunset views." Then she made the decision to move to Leisure Village in Presque Isle to be among her many lifelong friends. She loved living there, walking, visiting, and doing her daily jigsaw puzzles. Chickie was very much enjoyed by the residents at Leisure, and she will be greatly missed.
Chickie worked many years at Brown's Jewelry Store on Main Street. She was a member of the Mapleton Baptist Church and the Eastern Star.
She is survived by two sons and their wives; Dr. Terry W. and Paula Smith of Cumberland, and Timothy and Donna Smith of PA; a brother, Charles Long, and his wife Marilyn of Mars Hill; four grandchildren: Lisa Smith of NY, NY, Kristin (Willis) Shawver of North Yarmouth, Adam
Smith of Bath, and Hannah Smith of Quakertown, PA; four great grandchildren: Felix, Ivy, Mabel, and Ethel; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Russell Smith in 2008; a brother Harry Long; and three sisters: Sarah Buchanan, Mary Lantz, and Katherine Watson.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, September 15 at noon at Fairmount Cemetery, Presque Isle with the Rev. George McLaughlin officiating. Donations in her memory may be made to the
Aroostook House of Comfort and/or the Mapleton Baptist Church, P. O. Box 174 Mapleton, ME 04757.

Your mom was very special to my mom, Elrita Bell, when they worked together at Brown’s. She was sweet and kind. May your many memories comfort you all.
