Calais, Maine - Albert W. Hartford, a humble and resilient man, peacefully passed away on June 5, 2025, at the age of 82, at the Maine Veterans' Home in Bangor. Albert was born in Lewiston on January 24, 1943, but resided in Calais since his youth.
He served in the U.S. Navy and then began his career as a master electrician at the paper mill in Baileyville. His quiet strength and perseverance enriched the lives of those around him. He was a dedicated and loyal son, husband, father, and grandfather. Albert was an active member of his community and served as a long-time board member for the Eastern Maine Electric Co-op. He apprenticed many future electricians teaching at the vocational school. Albert was also a member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of the NRA.
Despite his quiet nature, Albert was always listening and when he spoke, his words were plain and meaningful. Albert was the go-to guy when something needed fixing. However, legend has it he may have once shut down the entire Woodland Mill. Everyone let that slide though because he kept the place running more than he ever shut it down. Albie loved tinkering in his machine shop fixing what others could not and working on many other projects including one-lung (hit-and-miss) engines. Albert was instrumental in fabricating the foot bridge on the Calais Waterfront Walkway - an achievement as sturdy and reliable as he was. Albert's hobbies extended to socializing with friends over breakfast at local diners initially at "Olle" Olsson's Angelholm, then Mom's/Karen's Diner, afternoon coffee, and enjoying a good episode of Star Trek. Albert valued his family, friends, and daily routines more than anything else. His warmth and dry DownEast humor, expressed through good-natured grumpiness, was appreciated by family and friends. Until his last moments a quip from Albert made everyone smile.
He is survived by his daughter, Lisa (Hartford) Genco and her husband, Mike Genco, and their son, Joseph; his son, Orville A. Hartford and his wife, Julie, and their daughters, Sarah and Amelia; his sister, Lucy (Hartford) Kees and her daughter, Kathy. Albert was preceded in death by his father, Orville E. Hartford; mother, Ina "Miss Ellie" Hartford; brother-in-law, Gerald Kees; and his beloved wife, Patricia. Patsy will welcome him home in eternal rest to Calais, a reunion he had yearned for since her passing.
In keeping with Arnold's wishes, a private burial will take place at Calais Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Condolences and memories may be shared at MaysFuneralHome.com. We encourage all who knew and loved Albert to leave their memories and upload photos to his memorial page. As Albert would say, "Beam me up Scotty" and "Live long and prosper."
