Zelma's Story

NEWBURGH - Zelma (Ward) Young, of Newburgh, passed away in her daughter's arms, surrounded by her family on April 10, 2016. She was born April 17, 1927, in Newburgh, the daughter of Earl and Iola Ward. Zelma was a loving wife to her husband, Robert, for 65 years, who passed away on August 10, 2013.

Zelma has joined her husband Robert; son; Wayne; and grandson, Chad.

Zelma worked at Newburgh Elementary School as a cook for many years and had a genuine love of children. She loved to hear the laughter of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as watch them play. She enjoyed crafts and made lots of quilts that many in her family have to treasure. Many children were kept warmer through the winter with mittens and hats she made and donated to schools and hospital. Her happiest memories were of camping with her family, cooking and gardening.

She is survived by her daughter, Cindy and her husband, Michael Corbett; daughter-in-law, Collette Young; grandchildren, Denise, Angela and her husband, Mark, Holli, Chris and his wife, Maggie; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Eleanor Whitcomb; sister-in-law, Louise Ward; many nieces and nephews.

Zelma was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.
