- Winona A. (Gray) Custer 89 died Aug. 23, 2016 at her North Newport home following a long illness. She was born in North Newport April 6, 1927 the daughter of Ralph C. and Clara (Hayden) Gray.
Winona attended the Hubbard Rural School through the 8th grade. She graduated from Newport High School in the class of 1945. She apprenticed at Greenways Beauty Shop and became a Hair Dresser in 1946.
Winona moved to Skowhegan in 1957 teaching at Una's Academy of Beauty Culture, then she worked at Norwock Shoe. She met and married DeWayne Custer on 1964 and they moved to California and then on to other Navy bases that he was assigned to. They moved back to North Newport in 1971 and bought the home that she was born and grew up in.
Winona worked for Dexter Shoe in Dexter and Newport for several years retiring in 1992.
Winona enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and gardening. She was a member of the North Newport Grange and Past President of the American Legion Auxiliary of Newport.
Winona is survived by her husband DeWayne Custer of North Newport, her daughter Marie Carter of Palmyra, her very special granddaughter and her husband, Colleen and Steve Richardson of Palmyra, two sisters and their husbands, Regina and Louis Tuttle of Newport, Dodie and Roy Duplisea of Palmyra, several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sisters Barbara and Sandra, and a son-in-law Darrell Carter.
Friends may call Wednesday Aug. 24, 2016 from 7 to 8 PM at the Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center 34 High St. Newport. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 10 AM Thursday Aug. 25, 2016 at the North Newport Cemetery with Rev. Ernest Campbell officiating.
