GREENVILLE - Winifred R. Sawyer, 92, passed away peacefully January 28, 2016 at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after a short stay.
Winnie was born in Portage Lake March 27, 1923, the oldest child of Joseph O. and Odella (Daigle) Perry.
Winnie was a graduate of Greenville High School, class of 1940 and retired from Northeast Bank in Greenville after 17 years. She also worked for the U.S. Weather Bureau for many years, taking observations every few hours both day and night for many years, as did others in the Sawyer family. Many lost hours of sleep during the night but she enjoyed the job. She also enjoyed many years working at Sawyer's Store with husband Paul, and three brothers-in-law.
Winnie and Paul spent many of their 55 years of marriage going ice fishing and summers at camp on Wilson Pond.
Winnie was a communicant of the Holy Family Catholic Church all her life, helping on suppers and cooking for church fairs. She sang in the church choir for many years. She was also a volunteer on the Steamship Katahdin on Moosehead Lake and served as a volunteer for Meals For Me.
She was predeceased by her husband Paul W. Sawyer, who passed away in 1996, her parents, and four brothers-in-law, Hugh and Charles Sawyer, John Kimble and Lyman Smith.
She is survived by a brother, Lorenzo J. Perry of Tilton, NH Vet Home; Carmel Smith of Graybirch Nursing Home in Augusta; Rita Robert Roux of North Vassalboro; and Frances and Keith Davis of Greenville; two sisters-in-law, Charlotte Kimble of Muskeegan, MI and Elizabeth Robbins of Waterville; and many nieces and nephews from the Perry and Sawyer families.
Spring burial will be in the Greenville Cemetery next to her husband.
