Wilma's Story

DOVER-FOXCROFT - Wilma Evelyn (Gray) Andrews passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, September 25, 2014. She was born in Foxcroft to Harold L. and Marjorie L. (Foster) Gray on August 4, 1922. Wilma was a life-long resident of the Gray Homestead on Park Street. She graduated from Foxcroft Academy in the Class of 1941, and worked for P.E. Ward for a short time before her marriage to Gordon M. Andrews in March of 1946. She assisted Gordon in his farming efforts and raised three daughters before going back to work at J.J. Newberry and ultimately becoming the manager of the Dover-Foxcroft store. Gordon and Wilma were married for 55 years before his death in March of 2001.

Wilma was an active member of the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church and enjoyed preparing chicken pies with the members of the "Kitchen Crew" there. Wilma played an integral role in the reorganization of the Southern Piscataquis County Chamber of Commerce, devoting many hours of volunteer time after her retirement. She was also active in the Junior Cosmopolitan Club, Cosmopolitan Club, Garden Club, Percolators, Central Grange, and in later years participated in the bi-weekly meetings of the Senior Network where she proudly toted her culinary delights for all to enjoy.

Thanks to the vigilant care from her daughter, Carol, Wilma spent the last years of her life in the place that she loved the most, the Gray Homestead. Gail spent summers there preparing delicious meals and assisting Carol in the care process as did other family members when they visited the farm. The family wishes to thank three special caregivers, Lacie Clark, Amanda Robinson, and Patty Burhoe; the staff of Community Home Health and Hospice Services and Pine Tree Hospice as well as Dr. Lesley Fernow, who were all essential partners in Wilma's home care. Many friends were faithful visitors in Wilma's home throughout her illness, especially Phyllis Weatherbee, Marie Thompson, Helen Higgins, Donna Hathaway, Nancy Seavey and her three children.

Wilma is survived by her three daughters and their families: her oldest daughter, Gail (Bill) Snodgrass of Woodsfield, OH, their two sons, Bill (Julie) Snodgrass of Laurel, MD, Brian (Trish) Snodgrass and their two children, Megan and Justin, of Newark, OH; her middle daughter, Joyce (Mike) Crawford of Clermont, FL, and their two sons, Kyle Crawford (Kim Rizzo) of Florissant, CO, Aaron (Heather) Crawford and their two children, Aidan and Haylee of Clermont, FL; and her youngest daughter, Carol (Steve) Conner of Dover-Foxcroft, and their children, Sarah Harvey of Bradenton, FL, Josh (Amy) Conner and their two children, Adam and Allison, of Dover-Foxcroft, and Chris (Sonya) Conner of Sangerville.

Donations in memory of Wilma may be made to the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church, PO Box 328, Dover-Foxcroft 04426, or to Pine Tree Hospice, 883 W Main Street, Dover-Foxcroft 04426, or to the Gordon and Wilma Andrews Horizon Scholarship Fund at Foxcroft Academy, 975 W Main Street, Dover-Foxcroft 04426. At Wilma's request, a memorial service and celebration of her life with Rev. Chad Poland officiating, will be planned in the summer of 2015. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.
