William's Story

Text size

Davie - William Norman Parsons Jr. passed over to the other side on January 8th, 2017 less than 3 months shy of his 76th year after a long 19 year struggle with a terminal disease. Bill was born on April 4th, 1941 in Fall River, Massachusetts, son of Rose Margaret Arlene and William Norman Parsons.
He graduated from Lawrence High School in Fairfield, Maine class of 1959. After graduation, Bill became a certified Life Guard and worked many summers in Southwestern Maine and Western Massachusetts as waterfront director for a number of summer camps for kids where he also taught swimming, canoeing, sailing, and led overnight canoe camping trips.
Later on he ended up in East Millinocket, Maine working for Great Northern Paper Company running one of their paper machines manufacturing newsprint for shipment around the world.
Missing his love of teaching swimming, he later moved to the warmer climes of Florida so he could teach swimming year round and started his own business teaching adults, teenagers, toddlers, and infants to swim. He taught many infants at 6 months of age to swim even before they had learned to walk. Most of the children of the Miami Dolphins football team were taught to swim by Bill. It is estimated that he has taught well over 5,000 youngsters to swim. Think of the lives potentially saved from drowning in the pools and canals of Florida because of his passion. Bill also holds a United States patent for the invention of a swimmers learning device.
Bill leaves behind an older brother, Linwood, sister-in-law, Betty, a younger sister, Joan, and numerable nieces and nephews.
He will be remembered by those who knew him as a consummate joker. One of his often quoted and favorite lines was his weather forecast to himself. "Every day, I want to keep a cool head and a warm heart". Bill was one of the most caring persons to have ever walked on this planet. He loved us all and gave us everything he had.
A memorial for Bill will be held in Maine in the Spring.
"RIP", Bill!
