William's Story

ELLSWORTH - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, William M. Austin on the morning of December 6, 2015. A religious man, he was with his granddaughter Dawn and son Tom as he went to be with his Lord. Bill was born May 5, 1930, the son of H. Dana and Rita Austin.

Bill grew up in Ellsworth and attended Ellsworth schools. After graduation he went to work at Union Trust Company as a loan officer. His career lasted until his retirement in 1995. During this time he also co-owned and operated Ellsworth Motorcycle and Flanders Bay Cabins. Over the years, Bill also served on the Red Cross and Ellsworth Library boards. Bill was community minded and took these obligations very seriously. Bill was a motorcycle enthusiast and loved riding his Goldwing. He belonged to GWRR and enjoyed many rides with the group. He and his friend, Ralph Allen, completed the 4 Corners Ride, from Fort Kent, Maine to Key West, Florida, Washington state and California. At age 75, he visited the only state that he had not been in on his motorcycle, Kentucky, with his son Jack and daughter-in-law, Debbie. Bill was a kind man and a true gentleman and he made a lot of friends through his dedicated career and community associations.

On August 20, 1949, Bill married the love of his life, Elizabeth Moran. Together they raised 3 sons, Jack, Tom and Jimmy. Bill was very devoted to Betty and he took care of her after she was struck with cancer and suffered a stroke. He patiently took care of her himself, waving aside any help from others. They liked to take long rides, stop for picnics and look for moose. He was a good husband and father, supportive and devoted to his family. There were many family vacations and family gatherings. When the grandchildren came along, you could always find him attending sporting events and other activities they were involved in. There was nothing he liked more than cheering on the grandchildren and his many nieces and nephews. Bill loved attending Ellsworth High School basketball games and when he no longer could attend, he would listen on the radio.

Bill is survived by son, Jack and his wife Debbie, of Stockton Springs, son Tom and wife Darleen of Veazie, grandchildren; Dawn Raybourn and husband Dustan of Ellsworth, Christine Mahon of Scottsdale, AZ, Greg Austin of Stockton Springs, Billie Austin and husband Daniel Rydh of Los Angeles, CA, Mike Austin of Benson, AZ, Chloe Austin of Portland and Emily Davis and husband Justin of Belfast. Great grandchildren; Jennifer Gray and husband Richie of Trenton, Taylor Cousins and fiancé Adam Kaspala of Bangor, Katie Mahon of Scottsdale, AZ, MacKenzie Austin of Benson, AZ and Brielle Austin of Stockton Springs and great great granddaughter Kinley Gray of Trenton.

Bill leaves his sister, Louise Sealy and husband George of Ellsworth, sister-in-law, Bette Austin of Ellsworth, two very special nephews, Harvard Austin of Ellsworth and Mike Moran of Bangor and special friends, Marie Pierson of Ellsworth and Debbi Ostrovsky of Mount Kisco, NY. He leaves many nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his parents, his brother Dana Austin in 2006, his son Jimmy in 2010 and his beloved wife, Betty on May 9, 2015.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Courtland Living Center for their loving care the past 4 years and the care given the family.

Per Bill's wishes there will not be a service, but rather a time of comfort and celebration of life at time to be announced. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
