Wayne's Story

Old Town - Wayne T. Smith, 68, died peacefully January 2, 2017, at his residence with family by his side. He was born August 13, 1948 in Caribou a son of Jasper and Ruth (Irvine) Smith.
Wayne grew up in Orono and graduated from the University of Maine. Wayne has always been fascinated by technology and has been employed in the IT System Technology Department at the University of Maine for 45 years. He worked behind the scenes at Old Town Elementary School to ensure that the technology at the school was working properly and up to date. Wayne has been active in his community and was a member of the Old Town Orono Kiwanis and served as an usher at the University of Maine Hockey Games. His love of college hockey led him to forming HOCKEY-L, which became newsletter type mailing list where hockey fans had the ability to share stories and scores. He has attended the Frozen Four every year, further allowing him to connect with fellow hockey enthusiast. As his son Ben was growing up he became a very involved parent supporting his various activities from scouting, swimming, tennis, to music. Wayne attended many of the music trips as a chaperone, and just recently gave a donation to all three music programs at the elementary, middle, and high school. As a swim parent, Wayne became a timer, and as a Tennis Dad, Wayne was at all the meets with water and snacks. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing pool, bowling, or a pick up game of basketball. He enjoyed living at the lake and spending time with his dogs.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years Becky (Anderson) Smith of Old Town; two sons Justin Smith and his wife Sherron Bassett of Rochester, NH, Ben Smith of Old Town; his mother Ruth Smith of Myrtle Beach, SC; brother Brian Smith and his wife Rita of Charlottesville, VA; nieces Abby and her husband Dane Honhart, Courtney and her husband Matt Kattler, and Meghann Smith-Valente. He was predeceased by his father and a brother Bruce Smith.
Friends may gather 4-6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m., Friday at the United Baptist Church of Old Town, 86 Middle St., Old Town.
