Walter's Story

CARMEL - Walter Thomas Demmons, 80, husband of the late Norma (Saulnier) Demmons, died peacefully June 4, 2014 at his daughter's home. He was born Aug. 6, 1933 in Sangerville, Maine, the son of Eugene and Doris (Dulac) Demmons.

Walter grew up in Bangor and lived most of his life in Carmel. He was drafted in 1950 and served in the US Army in Alaska and Korea and joined the Naval Reserve in Bangor in 1955. He worked as an auto mechanic, carpenter and contractor for many years and owned and operated his own construction company. Over the years, Walter's spare time was spent camping, farming, hunting, snowmobiling and showing horses. He was a founder of the Hermon Snowmobile Club and was a member of the Lynde Lodge #174, AF & AM, Hermon and the Anah Temple Shirne, Bangor for 10 years.

Surviving are five children, Steven Demmons and his wife, Ellen of Lyman, Donald Demmons of Brewer, Daniel Demmons and his wife, Kathy of Hermon, Gerald Demmons and his wife, Penny of Levant and Laurie Stevenson and her husband, Scott of Portland;16 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild; one brother, Louis Demmons and his wife, Lucille of Carmel; three sisters, Barbara Potter and her husband, Edward, Betty Hurlbert and her husband, Roger of Florida and Mary Mulldune and her companion, Mike of Carmel; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, his son, Michael Demmons, a daughter-in-law, Shirley Demmons and by his companion, Darlene Burgess.

Family and friends may visit 6-8 PM Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor where a service honoring Walter's life will be held at 10 AM Monday, June 9, 2014 with Pastor Pencil Boone, presiding. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor. A reception with lunch and fellowship will be immediately afterward at Walter's home, Horseback Rd., Carmel.
