Wallace's Story

Belmont - Wallace 'Wally' Thorburn, 76 of Belmont, passed away at Togus on October 1st after a long illness. He was born August 27, 1940, in Brockton, Massachusetts, the oldest son of Wallace F. and Eldora E. (Reed) Thorburn. Wally was a very proud veteran of the U.S. Navy. His first 4 years from 1957-1961 were served on board ship on the USS Shields and briefly on the Halsey Powell as signalman. His ports of call included Subec Bay, Phillipines, Okuska, Japan and patrolled the straits of Formosa. From 1961-1978 he became an aviation mechanic reaching the rank of E6.
Upon retiring from the military, he became a school bus driver having driven 10 years in Massachusetts and 10 years in Maine when we moved here in 1988. Wally enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, camping, and spending time with family.
He leaves his loving wife of 54 years, Carolyn (Wood) Thorburn; two daughters Amerine and her children, Jarred and Jennifer Lyn Villiard; Jennifer E. and her two children, Brandon and Chase Curry; two sons Michael and his significant other, Anne Snyder and Daniel and his wife Dale and her children Michael and Nathan McGovern. He also leaves two brothers, Thomas and wife Pat of Brockton, MA, John and wife Lucy of Florida and sister Marilyn of VA. He was predeceased by both parents as well as his sister Donna.
Visiting hours will be held at Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast from 4-6 p.m. October 6th. Burial will be held 10 a.m. October 7th at Maine Veterans Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta. Memories and condolences may be shared at www.ripostafh.com.
