BROOKLIN - Wallace W. Rockwell "Rocky", 97, died at the Island Nursing Home in Deer Isle on June 15, 2014. He was born Oct. 20, 1916 in New Brunswick, Canada, the son of Lulu Prosser and Colby Shaw.
Rocky grew up and attended school in Greenville, Maine until he joined the army in 1941. He was stationed in Portland where he met his wife of 61 years, Louise Allen. After being discharged from the Army in 1945, Rocky moved to his wife's home town of Brooklin. Rocky worked as a boatbuilder, caretaker, and lobsterman for many years until he moved his family to Columbus, Indiana in 1963. While in Indiana, Rocky and Louise worked for the Sweeney/Miller family who were the founders of Cummins Engine Company and Irwin Union Bank. In 1974, they returned to their home in Brooklin and Rocky went back to his love of fishing and was also a handyman at Wooden Boat Magazine for several years. Rocky was also well known for his welcoming smile, laughter, and kindness at Brooklin General Store which he owned with his family from 1986 to 2003. Rocky was a 75 year member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and a 65 year member of the Mason's, member of Brooklin Baptist Church, and was awarded the Brooklin Alumni Citizenship Award in 2001.
He is survived by his only sister, Gertrude Rouviere of Damariscotta; two daughters, Lorna Grant of Brooklin and her two sons, Tony Bryant and wife, Jenny, Tim Bryant and fiancée, Rebecca Walker, all of Blue Hill, and daughter, Vauna Haza of Winterport and her three children, Stephanie Vetne and husband, Tom of Granger, Indiana, Jeff Haza and his wife, Diane of Roseland, New Jersey, and Chris Haza and his wife, Paula from New York, NY.; daughter-in-law, Florence Rockwell (wife of Townsend) of Columbus, Indiana and their sons, Thomas Rockwell and Ronie Rockwell of Columbus, Indiana; nine great-grandchildren. Rocky was predeceased by wife, Louise in Jan, 2005; son, Townsend in 2009; brothers, Ervin of Greenville, and Glen of Brunswick.
A service of remembrance will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2014 at Brooklin Baptist Church, Brooklin. Interment will be at Naskeag Cemetery.
