Virginia Francis Gay

Virginia's Story

Brunswick - Virginia Francis Gay - better known as Fran, Mom, or Nanny - was born August 17th, 1928, in Millinocket, ME. She was proud of her Lithuanian heritage from both of her parents.
After graduating from Stearns High School in Millinocket, she ventured to NYC, where she worked as a nanny and at Ma Bell. She enjoyed retelling stories of her experiences and of the lifelong friends she made. It was in NYC that she met her husband-to-be, Kenton Gay of Livermore Falls, ME. Ken was a career Naval Officer, so they moved frequently, living in Portsmouth, Falls Church, Norfolk, and Woodbridge, VA; Newport, RI; Bethesda, MD; Kittery, ME; San Diego, CA; Argentia, Newfoundland; and finally Brunswick, ME where they settled down a few years before Ken retired. Fran was well-known as a long-time employee in Senter's lingerie department, a place where she built many fond memories and friendships.
Fran was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease about 8 years ago, but managed to stay in her home until 4 years ago. It was then that she moved to the Betsy Ross House to be near family, but as her health declined, she moved to Village Crossing, an assisted living community. She stayed there until a year ago when she began to need skilled care, which brought her back to Brunswick and to Horizons, until her passing in the early hours of the morning, Tuesday, September 13, due to complications from pneumonia.
Fran is predeceased by her husband Kenton Gay of Livermore, parents Frank & Emily Vaznis of Millinocket, brother Donald Vaznis and his wife Hilda of Millinocket, brother Robert Vaznis and his wife Erlene of Millinocket, mother-in-law Helen (Gay) Jamison of Saco, father-in-law William Gay of Livermore, brothers-in-law Paul Bibeau of Livermore and Melvin Gay of Saco, and son-in-law Daniel Goggins of West Lake, OH.
Fran is survived by her daughter, Janice Goggins, and Janice's fiancé, Gordon Justen of West Lake, OH; granddaughter Erikka (Sandelin) Simmering, her husband Michael, and great-grandchildren, Max, Eva, and Aaron Bellenoit of Fort Polk, LA; grandson Jeffrey Goggins, his wife Kristen, and great-grandchildren, Danielle, Jillian, and Brendan of Brunswick, OH; and grandson Christopher Goggins and his wife Lindsay of Cary, NC.
She is also survived by her son Alan Gay and his wife Doreen (Saveikonis) Gay of South Portland, ME; grandson Ryan Gay, his wife Sarah, and great-grandchildren Hudson, Ginger, and Rosebud of South Portland; grandson Cameron Gay, his wife Julia, and great-grandson Logan of Santa Fe, NM.
She leaves behind her brother Frank Vaznis and his wife Hazel of East Millinocket; brother Lawrence Vaznis and his wife Gloria of The Villages, FL; brother William Vaznis and his wife Trina of Millinocket; brother Ernie Vaznis of Millinocket; brother David Vaznis and his wife Angela of Killmessan, Ireland; sister-in-law Judy Cyr; and 22 nieces and nephews.
We recognize the difficult and complex job the medical profession has caring for the elderly. We would like to thank them all for their care over the years, and specifically the many nurses and CNAs who made life easier and cared for Fran at Village Crossing, Horizons, and Mid Coast Hospital. A special thank you to Fran's favorite physician, Dr. Rhonda Krohl, who helped us during some difficult years. Thank you to the many caregivers at Comfort Keepers. Thank you to Jan Corey and Heather Smaha, who not only helped Fran, but became close friends; she loved and valued your friendship so much.
A time of visitation will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2016 from 2:00 - 3:00 PM at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street, Brunswick.
