- Vincent W. Coupal, 82, went home to be with the Lord on March 24, 2017, at the Machias hospital following a prolonged illness. He was born on November 19, 1934, in Kingston, New Hampshire, to Joseph R. Coupal Sr. and Esther E. (Langlais) Coupal. He graduated from Sanborn Seminary in Kingston, New Hampshire. He joined the US Marine Corp and was stationed in Paris Island, South Carolina; Quantico, Virginia; Great Lakes, Illinois; San Diego, California, and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. After separation from the US Marine Corp, he went to work for the Central Intelligent Agency. While working for the US government, he traveled to Washington DC and was then stationed in the Philippines, Cyprus, and Ghana, with TDY services to many other countries. Following 20 years of government service, he and the family moved to Old Town, Maine, where he became an instructor in electronics at Eastern Maine Vocational Technical Institute for 8 years, after which he worked for the State of Maine as the radio technician for Divisions 1, 2, and 3 until his retirement in 2000. Following his retirement, Vince and his wife opened a bed and breakfast, Inn at the Anchorage, in Lubec, Maine, where they hosted guests from across the United States and around the world until it closed in 2015. He was a beloved member of the congregation of Lifespring Chapel in East Machias, Maine, where he gave his life to the Lord on December 4, 2016.
In addition to his parents, Vince was predeceased by his brother, Joseph R. Coupal, Jr., a former manager for the City of Bangor, and his sister-in-law Ruth Coupal. He is survived by his beloved wife, Donna (Tibbetts) Miller-Coupal, and his 4 children: Lisa A. Coupal Sokol of Gaithersburg, MD; Phillip W. Coupal and wife, Darcy Watts Coupal of Centennial, CO; E. Michelle Coupal McClain and husband Todd McClain of Anacortes, WA; and Lynn R. Coupal Cootes and husband Paul Cootes Sr, of Hornersville, MO, along with his 11 grandchildren, Melissa Sokol, Jennifer Sokol, Stephanie Sokol, Joseph Coupal, Jonathan Coupal, Jennifer McClain-Dowrey, Andrew McClain, Jon Hutchinson, Catherine Cootes, Paul Cootes Jr., and Matthew Cootes; and two great-grandchildren, Alexandria Hutchinson and Savannah Hutchinson as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family wishes to acknowledge Barbara Rice and Rose Arsenault for the loving care they provided Vince during the past year as well as the companionship and support offered by friend and neighbor Tony Arseneault, along with the lovingkindness of the congregation at Lifespring Chapel. We would also like to thank the physicians and nursing staff of Downeast Community Hospital for the compassionate care given to Vince in his last days.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Lifespring Chapel in East Machias at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017, with Pastor Thomas Neal officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshment at the church following the service. A private interment will be at the Cutler Cemetery at a later date.
