CARMEL - Vernon Austin Smith, "Vernbe," 67, died unexpectedly, December 11, 2015, at his home in Carmel. He was born, August 22, 1948, in Bangor, the son of Glendon Earl Smith and Lillian Atwood (Barbour) Smith.
After graduating from Bangor High School in 1966, Vern served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. After the war, Vern returned to work through Local 321 Plumbers and Pipefitters United Association.
Vern was a life member and Past Commander of the Orrington VFW Post 4527, a member of the Ralph J. Pollard Lodge AF & AM of Orrington; and Anah Shriners, first in the NASCAR Unit, then the Aides and Directors Staff. He loved golfing with the Maine Seniors and hunting and puttering around at the "Big Fred" place in Troy with his friends and cousin, Randy.
Vern was a devoted husband and father. His wife and girls always came first. He loved to visit and cruise with his Yaya friends - always eager to sit in on a game of hand and foot with the ladies.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Patricia. Surviving, in addition to his wife, Joyce (Clukey) Smith; are his daughters, Marie Ames and her husband, Travis, Angela Cossette and her husband, Louis, both of Carmel; three grandchildren, Damian and Andrew Ames, and Hannah Cossette; two great grandchildren, Oryon and Aubree; two sisters, Priscilla McIntire and Glenda Mixer; and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 11:30 am to 1 pm, Saturday, December 19, 2015 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor, where a memorial service will be held at 1 pm and will be officiated by Reverend Dr. Rex H. Garrett. Relatives and friends are invited to share in conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., immediately following the service.
