Verna's Story

ISLAND FALLS - Verna Prescott MacArthur passed away in Patten on January 15, 2016. She was born May 26, 1919 in Crystal, ME to Iva and Ray C. Prescott, the oldest of 14 children.

She graduated as Salutatorian from Island Falls High School in 1936 and from Bay Path Institute in Springfield, MA in 1938. She worked for the Maine State Employment Service and the Civil Aeronautics Administration (Now FAA) in Alexandria, VA during WWII. She later transferred to the Veterans Administration at Togus.

In 1942 she married C. Keith MacArthur in Bath, ME and shortly thereafter moved to Island Falls to raise their 6 children, Norman of Brooks, Edwin and his wife Judie of Shin Pond, Dwight and his wife Barbara of Penfield, NY, Dwayne and his wife Sandy of Madison, Barry and his wife Ava of Crystal, and Karen and her husband Kerry of Patten. She was predeceased by her husband, C.K, in July of 1981.

Verna was a member of the United Baptist Church serving as choir member, church organist and Sunday school pianist. She served as President of the Katahdin Club, Vice President of the Senior Citizens Group, and President of the Women's Group at church. For 25 years she was a volunteer with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Southern Aroostook. In past years she and a good friend, Joe Corriveau, entertained with music in several nursing homes, hospitals, senior citizens clubs and high school reunions in the area. She received a certificate of appreciation from the Maine State Legislature honoring her for her volunteerism.

Verna, known as "GG," is survived by her six children, 12 adored grandchildren, and 25 precious great-grand-children. She is also survived by her baby sister, Hilda and her husband Albert Clukey; sisters-in-law, Susan Prescott and Jeanette Prescott; brother-in-law, Robert Mayer; and many nieces, nephews and cousins of whom she was always so proud. She was predeceased by her parents and 12 siblings.

Friends may call 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the Island Falls Baptist Church where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ben Greene officiating. Spring interment will be in the Island Falls Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Building Fund at the United Baptist Church or to a charity of one's choice.
