Velma's Story

ST. ALBANS - Velma A. Sawyer, known to all as Binga, died peacefully on Friday, March 18, 2016 in Pittsfield.

Binga was born on October 5, 1921, in St. Albans, Maine, the daughter of the late Joel and Doris Neal. She worked for several years in Hartland at the Hanson's Clothing Store, Hartland Tannery and Sanfield Nursing Home.

Binga was the kind of lady who was matter of fact. She was known in the family as "the doctor." She enjoyed being independent and lived in the same home for 60 years. She recently was the recipient of the Boston Post Cane Award for being the oldest citizen in St. Albans, an award that she was very proud of. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing and dance. She enjoyed all kinds of music, especially Big Band and country. She also liked playing BINGO.

She is survived by her children, Sandra Letellier and husband, Paul, of Milan, NH and Englewood, FL, Ricky Sawyer of Skowhegan, Gary Sawyer and companion, Charlotte Rollins, of Newport and Englewood, FL, Lana Hall and her companion, Hank Camarcho, of Englewood, FL and Judy Anderson and husband, Alton Sr, of Palmyra; grandchildren, Randy Letellier (Brenda), DeAnn Murphy (Tom) Troy Letellier (Whitney) Susan Lovell, Tina Knight Pray (Steven), Robert Domonski, Louise Johnson (Brian), Duane Sawyer, Jennifer Lawler (Corey), Lee-Anne Robichaud, Amy Lucas, and Alton Anderson II (Shana); 22 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; sisters, Geraldine Plummer of Gorham, NH and Gwenith Gee of Washington, ME; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Maurice Sawyer in 1987; sister, Pauline Stark; infant brother, Harland Neal; daughter-in-law, Sharlene Sawyer; grandsons, Timothy Sawyer and Jeffrey Meagher; great grandson, Joshua Sawyer; and two nephews, Peter Plummer and Randy Gee.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, March 24, 2016, at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Avenue, Pittsfield. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, March 25, 2016, at the funeral home with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. A gathering will be held at Alton and Shana's Home, 515 Nokomis Road, Corinna, immediately following the service. A spring committal will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, May 20, at the Village Cemetery, Cemetery Road, St. Albans.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be given to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Northern New England Chapter, 114 Perimeter Road, Nashua, NH, 03063, in honor of her great great grandson, Jaxson, or to the St. Albans Fire Department, 8 Water Street, St. Albans, Maine, 04971, in Binga's memory.
