Velma's Story

GREENBUSH - Velma Howard of Greenbush, Maine, passed away peacefully at home on March 19, 2016, with her loving family by her side. She was born on September 5, 1931.

Velma attended a one-room schoolhouse in Cardville, Maine. She left school at an early age to work on the family farm. Proudly she earned her GED when she was in her 50's. Velma enjoyed many years of snowmobiling and was a member of the Greenbush Gremblins. Among her many pastimes were knitting, crafting, sewing, taking care of flowers, watching children play in the yard, swinging during the warm weather and camping at Park's Pond. She worked for many years at Sylvania in Bangor. Retirement brought many happy hours spending winters in Florida. She loved learning new skills on her computer and eating lunch at Governor's, with her many family and friends. She lived life to the fullest and was the thread that kept the family together. She was like a mother to everyone.

Velma is survived by her husband, Merle Howard, to whom she was married for 67 years; daughter, Suzette Howard Carter and her husband, Harold; son, Merle L. Howard and partner, Beth O'Keefe; son, Craig Howard and girlfriend, Lisa Farrell; grandchildren, Noel Poulin, Crystal Buzzell and husband, Jeff, Rebecca Howard, Sarah Carter and longtime love, Dan Schock, and Lance O'Keefe; great-grandchildren, Michael Buzzell, Haley Buzzell, Faith Herrmann, Carter Schock, Christian Renaker and Quentin Renaker; three very special nieces, Laura Hutchings, Linda Emerson and Alvina Bean and their families; and special nephew, Ronnie Taggart and his longtime partne,r Mary. She was predeceased by her mother, Gertrude Springer; father, Lewis Kennedy; twin sister, Thelma Doane; special aunt, Albra Kennedy; and granddaughter Amber O'Keefe.

At Velma's request, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the Cancer Center of Maine, 33 Whiting Hill Road, Brewer, ME 04412.
