- Timothy Murray Hess was a man of many passions, including nature, photography, plant taxonomy, gardening, biking, and politics. Born in Delhi, India, he traveled the world as the child of a diplomat, spending much of his childhood in South Korea and Canada. He spent much of his time as a young adult in northern California, biking through agricultural fields to college classes and enjoying time on the beach.
Despite having seen more of the world as a kid than many see in their whole lives, Tim always wanted to live in Maine. He loved the peace of nature, and eventually was able to combine his love of nature and his love of Maine into a job doing research on wild blueberries. It was in Maine that he laid down roots and started a family. He instilled his love of nature into his children, making frequent camping and hiking trips as a family, vacationing with family and friends, and spending summers on the blueberry barrens in downeast Maine. He delighted in being able to adopt two Rottweilers, who became his constant companions and part of the family adventures. We all cherish this time we had with him.
After a traumatic brain injury left Tim needing more support, he was blessed to become part of another family with whom he lived. He learned to enjoy simply being; sitting outside and being in the sun, reading the paper every day, going on long walks, staying on-top of politics, and making new friends. Despite being placed in a difficult situation, he truly found another home and family of which to be a part. Two families came together as one because of Tim and for that we are all grateful.
Life was not always easy for Tim because of illness and he struggled to accept the difficult challenges he faced, and he struggled with substance use. Despite these challenges, he remained a kind hearted, gentle, peaceful, and compassionate person. His brain injury didn't dampen his ability to share the stories of his life that mattered most to him, and to engage thoughtfully with others. We are all better people for having known him and we will miss him and his beautiful spirit.
Tim is survived by his loving, hodge-podge family and friends, including his children Jordan Hess and Kalie Hess and her partner Wayne Emington; Lori Austin and her partner Dave Stevens; his sister Jennifer Hess and her wife Jennifer Bragdon, and their children Emmett Bragdon Hess and Cinta Streeter; his brother Patric Hess; and his wonderful caregiver Sharon Ackley and her daughter Noel Stormann.
Tim was predeceased by his parents, Clyde and Muriel Hess, his brother Dustin Hess, and his best friend Rick Osborn.
The family sends our gratitude to the multitudes of medical personnel who helped Tim live his life to the fullest, with a special thanks to Dr. Kevin Miller who worked tirelessly to help manage his difficult medical situations for over 20 years.
