ORRINGTON - Tim Herbert Hutchins, 62, loving husband, incredible father and grandfather, devoted son, and thoughtful brother, passed away September 6, 2014 surrounded by family at home in Orrington after his battle with cancer. Tim was born May 14, 1952 eldest child and only son of Beryl (Jane) Haverlock and the late Keith E. Hutchins.
He grew up with a sense of family duty, spending much of his time working alongside his father, a local butcher in Orono. Tim graduated Maine Maritime Academy with a bachelor's in Marine Engineering in 1974. He went on to work for General Electric and loyally spent his entire career there until he retired in 2010. Tim's specialty was in steam turbines - troubleshooting GE steam turbine controls and reduction gears on ships, submarines, aircraft carriers, and land propulsion turbines in over 40 countries. Tim was an adventurer and fondly talked of his travels such as his cross-country motorcycle trip. On one of his trips to Singapore he met Susan Tan and they later married on March 1, 1980. He told fantastic stories, which reflected his sense of humor, attention to detail, and great memory. In recent years he was content to stay close to home and cruise around in his sports cars. An avid hunter, fisherman, and general outdoorsman, Tim enjoyed spending time with his family at their camps on Donnell Pond and in Masardis. He loved sports, specifically New England teams. He was proud that all his children played football and in his support he never missed one of their games. His values and legacy will be passed on through his surviving family.
Tim is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Susan, his daughter, Amy (Hutchins) Gersht and her husband, Michael, daughter, Michele Hutchins, son, Brent Hutchins, grandson, Max Gersht, mother, Jane Hutchins, sisters, Kim (Hutchins) and husband, Lloyd Kelliher, plus their children, and Louri Hutchins.
Tim and family would like to thank Cancer Care and Hospice of Eastern Maine for all of their heart and dedication.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Riverside Cemetery, 170 Bennoch Rd., Orono, with a gathering afterwards at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town.
