Thurza's Story

BREWER - Thurza J. (Fayle) Knaide, 94, wife of the late Frederick Knaide, died January 8, 2015 at a Bangor nursing center. She was born April 26, 1920 in Topsham, the daughter of Earle R. and Eula M. (Newall) Fayle.

Thurza grew up in East Millinocket and was valedictorian of her class at Schenck High School. She attended Beal Business School where she met her husband, Fred Knaide whom she married in 1942. When Fred served overseas during WWII, Thurza joined the war effort as a secretary at the Pentagon. After the war, they lived in Bangor and Brewer and she was active in local business organizations. She was president of the Jaycee wives, a member of the Junior League, Patawa Club and the Quipus Club, served on the board of Penobscot Valley Country Club and was a member of the Maine State Ladies Golf Assoc. Thurza enjoyed gardening, entertaining, needlepoint and most of all golfing. She will be remembered as a very loving, kind and gracious lady with her family as her greatest legacy.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Thomas Knaide and his wife, Sandi of Hampden; three grandchildren, Kara Kitchen and her husband, Robert, Matthew Knaide and his wife, Tanya of South Portland and Shannon Knaide and her fiance Troy Eastman of Bangor; five great grandchildren, Adynn, Brennan, Grace, Sydney and Kullen; a special nephew, Bob Fayle of East Millinocket and his, wife, Rita. She was predeceased by the love of her life, Fred, her brothers, Ralph and Robert Fayle. Thurza's family gratefully thanks the staff of Bangor Rehab and Nursing Center who cared for her while she was a resident there.

A service honoring Thurza's life will be held 1 PM Friday, January 16, 2015 at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor where family and friends may visit from 11 AM until the service begins. Burial will be in the spring at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
