Theodora's Story

BAR HARBOR - Theodora Henelt McCormick, 97, died Friday, March 13, 2015 in Bar Harbor, Maine. She was born June 10, 1917, in Hoboken, New Jersey, and raised there and on Long Island, "Theo" was the daughter of Anthony and Wilma (Milewska) Henelt.

At the start of WWII, she left her job at National City Bank Wall Street to join the Red Cross where she was sent to Saipan in the Mariana Islands. There as Saipan Ann, Theo hosted a radio show for the servicemen as an alternative to the Japanese broadcasts. Near the end of the war she met Army Lieutenant Stephen McCormick and they were married in 1945 in Alexandria, VA.

Steve resumed his career with Mutual Broadcasting in Washington, DC, and he and Theo hosted a radio show on WOL. Later she was involved with the NBC TV shows "Youth Wants to Know" and "American Forum of the Air" as an Assistant Producer for booking and production. Theo also wrote for the "Potomac Almanac", "Gaithersburg Gazette" and Capital Speakers Club World newsletter for many years.

Theo loved to sing, paint and travel - going around the world several times. Music, art and drama gave her much joy. She served as Chairman for many of her children's school events over the years. For 38 years Theo and Steve had a house on Swans Island, ME, and spent the last several years there full time surrounded by the caring community.
