Belfast - The Rev. John P Miller, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather departed this life peacefully and has entered the Kingdom of Heaven. He was 83.
John was born February 15, 1933 in Cambridge, MA to John S and Marguerite (Preston) Miller. Following his graduation from Reading High School in Reading, MA, and the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA, he attended Episcopal Theological Seminary in Cambridge, MA, earning his Masters of Divinity. He married the love of his life Barbara M. Crouse on September 8, 1956.
John was a man devoted to his family and his faith. He began his priesthood at St. Philip's in Holyoke, MA, moving with his growing family to Holy Trinity in Southbridge, MA. He was called to St. John's in Bangor, ME, in 1967, and was very active in the diocese serving in many capacities including President of the Standing committee. After being called to serve at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in MIddletown, CT, he moved there with his wife in 1981.
A devoted leader in the Episcopal church, John was also a gifted preacher. He had a way of bringing God's message to people that captivated them, moved them, and brought them closer to understanding the meaning of faith in their every day lives. He was a gifted counselor as well, and cared for the people in his congregations with loving guidance and commitment. His extraordinary sense of humor was always ready to lighten any situation, and those around him were blessed to love and be loved by him.
In 1994 he and his wife retired to their home in Wayne, ME, where they continued their ministry together at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Readfield, and St. Mark's in Waterville. They spent several years close to family and old friends and enjoyed very busy and fulfilling lives while living in Maine.
In 2004, John and Barbara moved to Pawley's Island, SC, after 3 years of wintering there. They spent their remaining years together in warmth and sunshine, and their worship together continued at Holy Cross/Faith Memorial in Pawley's Island until Barbara's diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease in 2007. As her illness progressed, John was devoted to her, spending time at her side, feeding her and telling her how much he loved her until her death in 2013. He continued to live his life in faith and service with his beloved dog Little Bit by his side.
John will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by one daughter, Robin Johnson and her husband Joe of Waterville, ME, three sons, Geoffrey Miller of Penobscot, ME; Chris Miller and his wife Carol of Hermon, ME, and Peter Miller and his wife April Clark of Lewiston, ME; 6 grandchildren, Mike and Matt Johnson, Cleo and Wyatt Miller, Sean Griffiths and his partner Brittany Berthiaume, and Scott Griffiths, and his wife Amy and 5 great-grandchildren Savannah, Easton, Ryder, Dawson and Bryson Griffiths.
