Terry Lynn Bate Retke, 52, of Bangor, passed away on Aug. 13, 2016, at Eastern Maine Medical Center following a long illness. She was born Oct. 20, 1963, the daughter of Larry Bate and Sandra Kay (Stoehr) Beaulieu, and graduated from Evergreen H.S. in Evergreen, Colo., class of 1972.
While attending Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., Terry worked at the local YMCA, where she mentored children in one of its programs. She often recalled this experience with fond memories, especially the time the YMCA took the children to see Pope John Paul IIs visit to Denver in the summer of 1993 as part of the World Youth Day Conference.
Another job Terry greatly enjoyed was waitressing at the Red Lobster in Boulder, where she had many interesting conversations with customers. Terry loved to travel and visited 40 of the 50 U.S. states. She also loved her cats, and eating spicy food and potato chips dipped in mustard. Her favorite song was Delta Dawn and she often included the phrases right on and far out in conversations.
Most of all, Terry loved her son, Sam Bate Knight of Bangor; her family; her longtime companion, Erv Stone; her nieces, Emma and Grace; her nephew, Jack; and her friends in AA and at The Barn.
Terry was predeceased by her brother, Kevin Bate, in January 2011. She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Kay and Harry Beaulieu of Randolph; her father of Denver; her son, Sam of Bangor; sisters, Michelle Missy Begin of Chelsea, Cheryl Rand of Wilton and Kelly McRorie of Prineville, OR, and their families; brothers, Joe of Bangor and Peter and his family of Jay; companion, Erv Stone of Bangor; and many close friends.
A memorial service will be held in the spring.
