Stewart's Story

WINTERPORT & BANGOR - Stewart Herbert Kingsbury, 93, of Bangor passed away Friday, May 30, 2014 at a local healthcare facility. Born in Bangor, March 28, 1921, the youngest child of the late George and Chloe (Bartlett) Kingsbury. He attended schools in Bangor, Frankfort and Winterport. Stewart was a World War II veteran serving in the US Army from 1940 to 1945. He served five years in the military as an auto mechanic; three years spent in Europe and Africa. After being honorably discharged, he worked as an auto and heavy equipment mechanic in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut for 40 years. Stewart was predeceased by this first wife Thelma (Leach) Kingsbury in 1981 and his only son Robert in 1987. In addition he was predeceased by his sister Virgie (Kingsbury) Knapp in 1991 and brother Lamont Kingsbury in 1992. In 1981, he returned to Maine and married Elnora (Bickford) Curran on January 15, 1982. Stewart and Elnora spent many winters in Lakeland, FL where they developed some lifelong friendships. Together they spent many hours playing cards with friends in Maine and Florida. Stewart is a member of Local 478 International Union of Operating Engineers and a member of St John's Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years Elnora (Bickford) Kingsbury; 8 stepchildren, Michael A. Curran of Brewer, Cynthia and Robert DeAvila of E Bridgewater, MA, Janet and Robert Morse of Bangor, Mary Ellen and Mark Blaisdell of Hampden, Richard H. Curran of Brewer, William J. and Jolyn Curran of Grand Haven, MI, Dennis W. Curran and partner, Lynne Leathers of Brewer and Timothy L. Curran of Brewer. He is also survived by 17 step grandchildren and numerous step great grandchildren, several cousins, nieces and nephews; a step brother and step sisters; a special sister-in-law, Ava Weaver of Hampden and brother -in-law and his wife, Ralph and Dorothy Bickford of Newburgh.

Family and friends may visit 9:30 - 11:30 AM Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service 299, Union St., Bangor where a service honoring Stewart's life will be held at 11:30 AM as the visitation concludes. Burial with military honors will be held at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor at a later date.
