Sterling's Story

WAYNESBORO, PA. - Sgt. Major Sterling James Buzzell, (US Army, Ret.), 78, passed away June 14, 2016. Born April 19, 1938, in Sangerville, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Ethel (Strickland) Buzzell.

Mr. Buzzell was a graduate of Piscataquis Community High School in Guilford, class of 1956. He served in the U.S. Army for 25 years, completing two tours in Vietnam, one tour in Korea and served as NCO in charge of Site R for five years. He retired in 1985. Following his retirement, he did government contract work for many years. He and his wife of 55 years, Mrs. D. Barbara (Hughes) Buzzell, were married February 25, 1961, in New Mexico. Mr. Buzzell was a member of Hawley Memorial Presbyterian Church, Blue Ridge Summit, PA, Antietam Fly Anglers, where he served as President of many years, Chesapeake Bay Watershed and was a supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project. He was a devoted grandfather who was known as "Bumpa." He was an avid fly-fisherman who enjoyed fly tying and was an active conservationist.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Scott S. Buzzell of Carthege, NY, Thomas E. Buzzell of Hinesburg, VT, and Dawn E. Buzzell of Waynesboro; ten grandchildren, Abigail Buzzell, Megan Biesecker, Jonathan Buzzell, Samuel Buzzell, Kurt Biesecker, Grace Buzzell, Patrick Mason, Rachel Martin, Austin Wishard and Logan Wishard; one brother, Norman Buzzell of Bangor; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Sidney Buzzell.
