VAN BUREN - Stella Chasse, 94, passed away on May 22, 2014 at an Eagle Lake health care facility. She was born in Van Buren on September 3, 1919, daughter of the late Belonie and Marie (Desrosiers) Chasse. Stella earned her Associates degree from St. Joseph's College in Windham and her Bachelor's degree in education from the University of Maine in Orono. She taught for forty years for the Van Buren school system. She was a lifelong communicant of the St. Peter Chanel Parish and also a member of the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed her years of retirement by knitting and working on genealogy. Stella was always ready to receive family and welcomed four generations of Chasse's to the family homestead.
She will always be remembered as the quiet backbone of many family gatherings, preferring to stay out of the limelight to ensure that everything was perfect.
Stella is survived by four sisters, Leola Ouellette and her husband Norman of Peabody, MA, Therese Smith of Fayetteville, NC, Jeannine Lynch
of Norwood, MA, and Sue Chasse of Van Buren; three brothers, Aurelien Chasse of Houlton, Fr. Joseph Chasse of Framingham, MA, and Emilio Chasse and his wife Betty of Syracuse, NY; a special nephew, Dr. Charles Plourde and his wife Linda of Van Buren; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings, Fr. Lucien Chasse, Lourdes Chasse, Juliette Plourde, Muriele Violette, Zel Collins, and Zoel Chasse.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11am on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at the St. Bruno-St. Remi Catholic Church. Family and friends may call at Lajoie Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren, from 9am to 10:30am on Tuesday before the Mass. Interment will follow in the Parish cemetery.
