Shirley's Story

LIMESTONE - Shirley Beatrice (Shelby) Sampson, 70, died peacefully on April 16, 2015, at a Bangor nursing home facility. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on January 17, 1945, and was the daughter of Melridge R. Shelby and Josephine Novella (Long) Shelby.

Shirley graduated from Limestone High School in 1963, as a member of National Honor Society. She graduated in 1967 from Syracuse University with a degree in social service, and was employed as a client services specialist with the Buffalo, New York Department of Social Services. Next she became a director at the Cherry Lane Nursing Facility in Laurel, Maryland. Returning to Maine she became a certified teacher. Shirley held teaching positions in Caswell, in Limestone, at Loring Air Force Base, and at Job Corps.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Lester Shelby, Alvin Shelby and Charles Shelby. Surviving in addition to her daughter, Rahshedda Renee, are sisters, Alva King, Carolyn Hatcher, Dana Cannon and Millye Chandler; and brother, Dr. Mel Shelby Jr.; also many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held at the United Methodist Church in Limestone at 11 a.m. on April 22, 2015. The family invites friends to join them in fellowship downstairs following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memoriam in Shirley's name to the National Kidney Foundation Inc., 30 East 33rd St., New York, NY 10016.
